SAN JOSE, CA.- The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) showcases Ho Voluto Volare (I Desired to Fly), an installation by Sidnea DAmico in the gallerys 560 South First Street window, on view through January 6, 2007. Ho Voluto Volare is part of the ICAs installation series Night Moves, providing after-dark programming in the gallerys windows, giving the ICA a nighttime presence while animating the downtown cultural landscape.
Sidnea DAmicos window installation Ho Voluto Volare is made up of more than 700 one-inch squares of resin within which the artist has suspended strands and globs of paint. These miniature three-dimensional paintings, seen en masse, appear as an explosion of color coming out of the window. The composition is freed from the confines of a canvas, or even a wall, appearing as if the individual components are flying off in multiple directions. Each square interacts with the adjacent units to form a unified whole. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that this massive painting is made up of innumerable individual components. For DAmico, this site-specific installation serves as a metaphor for contemporary society -- made up of individuals whose interactions are sometimes in harmony and sometimes not.
