East meets West at Bellmans this week
The sale includes several collections of some of the biggest names in British art, including Dod Procter, Louis Wain, Dame Laura Knight, Dame Elizabeth Frink, Duncan Grant, Julian Trevelyan, Mary Fedden and Ken Howard.



WISBOROUGH GREEN.- This week, Bellmans' autumnal auctions unite great art works from across the East West cultural divide. Asian Ceramics and Works of Art come under the hammer on Wednesday 20th November, presenting works spanning 400 years from the 17th Century to the 20th Century.

A highlight of the sale is a large Chinese Blue and White Baluster vase from the Kangxi period. The 52cm high vase is painted with a continuous scene, an official seated at a table with attendants, further figures gathered in a fenced garden outside, and the lower register painted with figures in a boat and a seated figure with attendant. It is estimated at £7,000-£10,000.

Other Kangxi vases are a Chinese Blue and White Gu-Shaped one with a figure on horseback approaching a scholar which is estimated to sell for £5,000-£8,000, while a tall Chinese Blue and White Dragon and Phoenix bottle vase with four dragons carries an estimate of £2,000-£3,000.

Further enamelled visually arresting works include conjoined moonflasks with a Qianlong mark, (estimate £4,000-£6,000); a rectangular incense burner and cover surmounted by a Buddhist lion final with the same estimate; a pair of Chinese gilt-metal and cloisonne Buddhist lions, (estimate £3000-£5,000).

A pair of Chinese Baluster Yellow-Ground Famille-Rose 'Dragon and Phoenix' vases with a blue six character Guangxu mark and of the period (1875-1908) with each vase enamelled to the sides with two dragons and two phoenixes is expected to fetch £5,000-£7,000.

Other lots of interest include a red-overlay blue-ground Peking glass vase (estimate £1,000-£1,500), a Chinese coral-ground reserve-decorated 'Bamboo' bowl (£2,000-£3,000) and a large Chinese Blue and White 'Qilin' deep dish from the 17th century (£4,000-£6,000).

There are also two lots of four Chinese Export tea production paintings each from the late 18th/19th century in watercolour and bodycolour on paper – ‘Purchased from S.Marchant & Son, 1982 by C.V. Payne, former Director of S.Marchant & Son' these are estimated at £1,000-£1,500 and £800-£1,200 respectively. From the Allen Collection comes a Chinese Blue and White bottle vase with Guangxu mark and period with an estimate of £4,000-£6,000 and three Chinese Export 'Rockefeller' pattern hot water plates from the Jianqing period of 1810 are expected to sell for £2,000-£3,000.

Vying for attention and record sales is The Modern British & 20th Century Art auction on Thursday, 21st November.

The highlight of this sale is Sir John Lavery's sketch for his great work, The Ratification of the Irish Treaty in the House of Lords on 1st December 1921. The sketch carries an estimate of £20,000-£30,000 and is a rare opportunity to purchase an original Lavery sketch and a record of a pivotal moment in the history of Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Among the collections' highlights are over 30 works by Mary Fedden, including both drawings around the £2,000 mark, alongside paintings with an estimate range of £6,000-£15,000, although the top lot, 'Black Fish', carries an estimate of £20,000-£30,000.

There are also eleven works by Conroy Maddox, the great and unswerving English surrealist painter and key member of the British Surrealist Group. Works by Maddox are estimated from as little as £400 up to £7000 and represent a great opportunity for collectors of surrealism. Alongside Maddox, the sale includes almost 50 works by the much-loved British painter Fred Yates.
