KREMS.- Austria's only museum dedicated to satirical art, the Karikaturmuseum Krems, has unveiled its exciting program for 2025, promising a diverse range of exhibitions that will appeal to art lovers of all ages. From biting political commentary to beloved children's book characters and explorations of our relationship with nature, the museum is set to offer a captivating year of exhibitions.

Kicking off the year on February 22nd is an exhibition dedicated to the sharp wit of political caricaturist Michael Pammesberger. For over two decades, Pammesberger's daily cartoons in the Kurier newspaper have provided insightful and often darkly humorous commentary on Austrian politics. This exhibition, coinciding with his 60th birthday and the publication of his book "Planet Pammesberger," will showcase a range of his work, from current pieces to early drawings and illustrated travelogues. Gottfried Gusenbauer, the museum’s artistic director, describes Pammesberger’s work as “caricature in its most beautiful and subversive form!”

From July 12th, the museum will welcome a much-loved literary monster: the Gruffalo. "Gruffalo & Co. Stories by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler" will celebrate the iconic children's book character and its creator, illustrator Axel Scheffler. The exhibition will trace the Gruffalo's journey from initial sketches to global phenomenon, showcasing original artwork from the beloved book and other collaborations between Donaldson and Scheffler, such as Stick Man, Zog, and Highway Rat. Curator Anna Steinmair emphasizes the duo’s “charming wit” and “clear, catchy style” which has had a “lasting impact on the genre of modern children’s book art.”

Sharing the stage with the Gruffalo from July 12th is "Longing for the Forest. Stories and Caricature," an exhibition exploring the enduring influence of the forest on human imagination and artistic expression. This exhibition will explore this theme through a variety of works, from fairy tales to contemporary concerns like climate change. Artists such as Bruno Haberzettl, Manfred Deix, IRONIMUS, Erich Sokol, Sarah Morrissette, Gerhard Glück, and Erich Eibl will offer humorous and critical perspectives on our relationship with nature, creating an immersive experience using natural materials and objects.

Also opening on July 12th is an exhibition focusing on the work of acclaimed graphic novelist Ulli Lust. "Ulli Lust. Woman as Human" will showcase her latest work, which delves into themes of identity, gender roles, and the search for freedom.

Finally, the museum’s own Deix Archive will be refreshed from February 22nd, focusing on Austrian domestic politics from the 1970s onwards. Approximately 60 original works by the renowned caricaturist Manfred Deix will feature prominent Austrian politicians, from Bruno Kreisky to Werner Faymann.

With its diverse lineup, the Karikaturmuseum Krems is set to offer a compelling and engaging program for visitors of all ages in 2025, proving that satire and humor can be powerful tools for reflection and understanding.
