CHAPEL HILL. NC.- The Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announces the new exhibition Triple Take: Dialogues with the Terra Collection-in-Residence, on view Jan. 31-May 11, 2025.

Experience Henri's Vibrant Portraits: Immerse yourself in the captivating portraits of Robert Henri, capturing the spirit of his subjects with remarkable sensitivity and skill.

The Ackland is fortunate to have great American paintings on long-term loan from the Terra Foundation for American Art. These paintings are the centerpieces of the three sections of Triple Take. Each section takes a different curatorial approach to gathering art from the Ackland’s rich holdings, connecting in often unexpected ways with the Terra Foundation loans. One section focuses on the career of modernist painter Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956). Another takes a backstage scene by Harlem Renaissance artist Archibald Motley Jr. (1891-1981) to reflect on themes of looking, privacy, and the mirror. The third section uses portraits of children by Robert Henri (1865-1929) and Ammi Phillips (1788-1865) to explore the effects of knowing or not knowing the identity of a sitter. Cumulatively, Triple Take invites the visitor to explore conversations between works of art made possible by imaginative reconfigurations of the collection.

“The Ackland is honored to showcase four masterpieces of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American painting from the collection of the Terra Foundation,” said Carolyn Allmendinger, interim director and director of education and interpretation. “We have taken their presence here as the springboard for a trio of installations that show how such works can present the Ackland’s collection in a new light. We have treated the paintings as magnets that attract related pieces from the Ackland’s holdings with often surprising results. Each exhibition within Triple Take adopts a different curatorial approach, allowing our visitors the chance to enjoy the diversity of the collection.”

“The Terra Foundation’s Collection-in-Residence program encourages museums to find new ways to understand and present their own collections of American art,” said Peter Nisbet, deputy director for curatorial affairs. “The Ackland has four paintings from the Terra Foundation on loan for four years, allowing us the opportunity to experiment with new ways to engage with them and our own works, and not only those by American artists. During the first year, we displayed them among art from similar time periods. Living with the paintings in that way prompted the idea for the very different approach of Triple Take.”

As part of the exhibition, the Ackland offers art-inspired events and learning resources for visitors of all ages, providing them with many ways to connect with the art on view.
