LONDON.- Christie’s auction of Prints and Multiples will feature important works by eminent artists, from Impressionism to Pop Art and Minimalism, with key highlights including Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Joan Miró, Egon Schiele, Marc Chagall and Bridget Riley, among others. It will be open for bidding online from 13 to 27 March 2025.

Leading the sale is Keith Haring’s The Fertility Suite, 1983 (estimate: £240,000 – 350,000), a set of five screenprints in colours, followed by Andy Warhol’s Queen Elizabeth II, from: Reigning Queens (Royal Edition), 1985 (estimate: £200,000 – 300,000), the most sought-after version of this subject, in diamond-dust-sprinkled shades of pink.

The sale will also present a significant grouping of works by Warhol, including: Mick Jagger, 1975 (estimate: £80,000 – 120,000), Rebel Without a Cause (James Dean), from: Ads, 1985 (estimate: £90,000 – 120,000) and Black Rhinoceros, from: Endangered Species, 1983 (estimate: £70,000 – 100,000), among others.

A remarkable ensemble of Pop Art includes the seminal series 11 Pop Artists, Volumes I, II and III from 1965 (estimates ranging from £30,000 to £200,000), featuring icons of printmaking such as Roy Lichtenstein’s Reverie and Sweet Dreams, Baby!. Acquired from the Sonnabend Gallery in Paris in 1969, these prints were never framed and retain their brilliant original colour.

David Hockney is also a major highlight in the sale, with 10 lots offered, among which are three lithographs and screenprints from his famous Weather Series from 1973 - Sun (estimate: £50,000 – 70,000), Snow (estimate: £30,000 – 50,000), and Lightning (estimate: £15,000 – 25,000) – in addition to etching and aquatint in colours such as Contrejour in the French Style, 1974 (estimate: £26,000 – 28,000) and lithograph in colours Pool made with paper and blue ink for book, from: Paper Pools, 1980 (estimate: £26,000 – 28,000).

The auction also features significant French prints from the fin-de-siècle period, including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s 1897 lithograph La Danse au Moulin Rouge (estimate: £120,000–180,000), a delicate portrayal of a lesbian couple dancing in a music hall. This work is part of a edition of twenty, along with four known proofs, of which at least thirteen are held in public collections. Additionally, a rare etched self-portrait by Edgar Degas, Edgar Degas, par lui-même (1857), is included in the sale (estimate: £50,000–70,000). It is one of only three impressions signed by the artist.

Modern prints feature linocuts and etchings by Pablo Picasso, lithographs by Marc Chagall, and an extensive group of prints by Joan Miró, including the early surrealist etchings Série noire et rouge from 1938.

Other artists included in the sale are: Man Ray, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Marcel Duchamp, Paul Gauguin, Howard Hodgkin, Gerald Laing, Louis Le Brocquy, Sol Lewitt, Paula Rego, Sam Francis, Giorgio Morandi, Edvard Munch, Ben Nicholson, Camille Pissarro, Gerald Laing, Lill Tschudi, Suzanne Valadon.

Contemporary Edition: London – Online 18 March-1 April 2025

The Contemporary Edition: London online sale, open for bidding from 18 March to 1 April 2025, offers sought-after editions by established artists and emerging talents. With estimates ranging from £500 to £150,000, this auction presents collectors with a vibrant selection of contemporary printmaking.

A large grouping of twenty-six editions by Banksy will lead the sale, with highlights including screenprints Girl with Balloon, 2004 (estimate: £150,000 – 250,000), and Flower Thrower Triptych (Grey), 2019 (estimate: £100,000 – 150,000) , as well as rare colourways of famous subjects such as Kate Moss: Purple, Hair Orange, 2005 (estimate: £70,000 – 100,000) and Choose Your Weapon (Sky Blue), 2010 (estimate: £60,000 - 80,000).

Other rare works by Banksy offered in the sale are editioned sculptures Axe (estimate: £40,000 – 60,000), realised in collaboration with Spanish artist Escif, and Wall Mounted Drone Set (Duck and Cover), a set of hand-painted resin multiples from 2019 (estimate: £50,000 – 70,000) which are Banksy’s updated take on the classic 70’s design of the three flying ducks.

Six lots by Julian Opie are also presented, among which are Old Street Walkers, 2022, a set of six lenticular acrylic panels (estimate: £50,000 – 70,000) never seen at auction before, and screenprint in colours on acrylic Sidewalk 2 from 2022 (estimate: £15,000 – 25,000).

Highlights from female artists include Bridget Riley’s screenprints Fold, 2004 (estimate: £4,000 – 6,000), Bagatelle 3, 2015 (estimate: £5,000 - 7,000), Magenta & Yellow, 2002 (estimate: £5,000 – 7,000) and About Lilac, 2007 (estimate: £5,000 – 7,000), in addition to several drypoints and aquatints by Louise Bourgeois (with estimates ranging from £1,000 to 18,000). Editions by Caroline Walker, Yayoi Kusama, Katherine Bernhardt and Sarah Morris complete the offering.

Presented in the sale are also works by Peter Doig, Invader, Alex Katz, David Shrigley, Pejac, Patrick Hughes, Ed Ruscha, Damien Hirst, Gerhard Richter, Thierry Noir, Stik, Ian Davenport, and Tony Cragg, among others.

An exhibition of the sales will be on view at Christie’s King Street from 13 to 26 March (Prints and Multiples) and from 13 to 31 March 2025 (Contemporary Edition: London).
