GOLDENDALE, WA.- The Maryhill Museum of Art presents the exhibit Sacred Presence: The Eternal Tradition of Orthodox Icons through November 15.
Historic and contemporary Orthodox icons are the focus of this intriguing exhibition curated by art historian Ann Nicgorski. These representations of sacred persons and scenes originated in early Christian and Byzantine sources and have continued to be of universal significance as both artistic and religious windows to a spiritual realm. Because of the importance of tradition and continuity of style, the established visual codes and techniques used in creating these Orthodox icons has varied little through the centuries. Nevertheless, against this background of rich tradition, the unique characteristics of each presentation shine forth, intended to captivate the viewer and to facilitate an encounter with the divine. Dr. Nicgorski is an Associate Professor of Art History at Willamette University and a Faculty Curator at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Salem OR.
