MONTGOMERY, AL.- Folk artist Mose Tolliver, 82, died of pneumonia. He was a self-taught artist. He bega to paint in the 1960s after being injured in his work. Mose Tolliver was born July 4, 1924, in Pike Road, Alabama. He left school in the third grade to work in the fields. He later worked as a gardener and housepainter.

In 1982 the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington held the exhibition titled "Black Folk Art in America: 1930-1980" and included works by Mose Tolliver.

Marcia Weber, a Montgomery art gallery owner, said, "That was a landmark exhibition that opened the eyes of so many people, the catalyst to helping them discover that this was an art form that needed to be taken seriously."
