NEWARK, NJ.-Leslie G. Wiser, Jr., Special Agent in Charge of the New Jersey Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and J.P Weis, Special Agent in Charge of the Philadelphia Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced today, that Federal Agents from the Newark Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Violent Crimes/Interstate Theft Task Force recovered the 1778 painting by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes entitled Children with a Cart. The painting, valued at approximately 1.1 million dollars, was recovered in good condition and appears to be unharmed.
The painting was stolen from a transport truck as it was parked overnight in a hotel parking lot in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania on November 8, 2006. The delivery truck was transporting the work of art from the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. At the time of the theft, the painting was scheduled to be displayed in the upcoming exhibition Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History, which opened at the Guggenheim on November 17, 2006.
Extensive publicity surrounded the theft of this artwork and a reward of up to $50,000 had been offered for information leading to its recovery. As a result of the
comprehensive media coverage of the theft, information was received by the FBI which assisted the investigative team and led to the recovery of the painting. As the investigation is ongoing, no further information will be provided concerning specific aspects of the recovery or possible criminal charges resulting from the investigation.
The successful recovery of Goya's Children with a Cart was due in part to tips received by the FBI. The FBI asks anyone with information about this theft or any other theft of major works of art to contact their local FBI Field Office or to contact the FBI Art Theft Program at www.fbi.gov/hq/cid/arttheft/arttheft.htm.
