BOWNESS-ON-WINDERMERE.- Windermere Jetty Museum announces An Archive, a new exhibition by Juliet Klottrup, an award-winning visual artist based in the North West whose work celebrates the deep connection between people, place, and heritage. Opening 11 October 2025, the exhibition will feature a striking body of photography and paintings inspired by the museums historic boat collection and the vibrant community that surrounds Windermere.
Klottrup, who works across photography, filmmaking, and painting, is acclaimed for her immersive, collaborative approach, creating intimate portraits and still lifes that capture the essence of belonging and identity. For An Archive, she has spent months embedded within the life of Windermere Jetty Museum, from its boat conservation workshop to encounters with visitors, local residents, and those who live and work on the lake.
Her practice is rooted in storytelling, documenting both social and environmental narratives. An Archive, is a new commission from Lakeland Arts which reflects Windermere Jetty Museums unique blend of maritime heritage, conservation expertise, blue spaces, local ecology, and community.
Juliet Klottrup states: Sitting with the collection, by the shoreline, and with the communities around Windermere Jetty Museum has shown me its a living thread between past and present. Daily life and new encounters continue to shape this place, with some routines unchanged, while the restoration of heritage boats keeps echoes of the past alive. This project is rooted in my lifelong connection to the lake and my ongoing commitment to photographing Cumbria.
Ben Haigh, Exhibition Manager at Lakeland Arts says: We are extremely excited to share Juliets archival exhibition. Juliets photography encapsulates a moment in the life of those who work in and visit our fantastic site. It highlights the deep-rooted connection we have with the blue spaces around us, and the desire to share the stories that take place here.
For Windermere Jetty, this exhibition lasts much longer than the 6 months that it will be on display. The photographs produced and stories collected will form an archive, to be housed alongside our captivating collections, giving a snapshot into life on Windermere for generations to come.
Klottrups filmmaking has earned international recognition. Her short documentary Travelling Home won the Sony Future Filmmaker Award in Los Angeles and will has screened at BAFTA and BIFA-qualifying festivals, including the London Film Festival, Bolton International Film Festival, Aesthetica Film Festival, and Women X Film Festival. This year, she has also been nominated for the Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize and will be exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in November.
An Archive is both a celebration and a preservation, a living record of Windermere Jetty Museums people, history, and environment in 2025. Visitors can expect an exhibition that is deeply rooted in place, visually intriguing and emotionally resonant.
