LONDON.- Christie's Prints and Multiples and Contemporary Edition: London online sales are now open for browsing on christies.com and on view at King Street, London, until 25 and 30 September respectively.
This season's Prints and Multiples sale presents works by some of the most influential artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Highlights include Erich Heckel's Paar (1910, estimate: £70,000100,000), a rare German Expressionist woodcut and one of only five known impressions in the red-and-black colourway, alongside Joan Miró's Makemono (195055, estimate: £10,00015,000), a monumental 10-metre lithograph inspired by Asian scrolls.
The auction also features works inspired by iconic imagery, in Andy Warhol's Details of Renaissance Paintings, Sandro Botticelli (Birth of Venus, 1482) (1984, estimate: £60,00080,000) and Eva Mudocci (After Munch) (1984, estimate: £60,00080,000). Further highlights include David Hockney's etchings Van Gogh Chair (Black) (1998, estimate: £30,00050,000), Artist and Model (1974, estimate: £22,00030,000), and The Student, from: Hommage á Picasso (1973, estimate: £10,00015,000).
A remarkable group of Impressionist and Modern works starts the sale, with a brightly coloured linocut by Pablo Picasso Portrait de Jacqueline au chapeau de paille multicolore (1962, estimate: £20,000-30,000) dedicated Pour Arnera pére Picasso, to the artists friend and printer Hidalgo Arnéra. Other artists represented include Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Marc Chagall, Maurits Cornelis Escher, and Jean-François Millet.
Contemporary Edition: London also places strong emphasis on British artists, with works by Grayson Perry, Damien Hirst, Peter Doig, and a number of signed editions by Banksy. Among the highlights are pieces from Banksy's Soup Can series, a parody of Warhol's Campbell's Soup cans using Tesco Value soup. Alongside the Original colourway are two rare variants: Soup Can: Banana Lime Purple and Soup Can: Violet Blue Tan (each estimated at £25,00035,000).
Coinciding with Perry's namesake exhibition at The Wallace Collection, Contemporary Edition: London presents thirteen works from a significant private collection of British prints. Highlights include Perry's 2021 etching The American Dream (estimate: £25,00035,000), Selfie with Political Causes (2018, estimate: £7,0008,000), and his monumental print A Map of Days (2013, estimate: £40,000-60,000).
The sale also offers some of the most recognisable motifs in contemporary art. Damien Hirst's The Souls on Jacob's Ladder Take Their Flight (Unique) (200716, estimate: £12,00018,000) features a large aquatint with a butterfly motif. Yayoi Kusama's Pumkin ST (2001, estimate: £18,00025,000) illustrates her famous golden-yellow pumpkin, while Banksy's hand-smudged Rat Clock (2019, estimate: £30,00050,000) represents one of the artist's most sought-after interventions.
Further highlights include works by Keith Haring, Bridget Riley, Salvador Dalí, Egon Schiele, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, and Roy Lichtenstein. Contemporary Edition: London continues to present rare and highly sought-after editions by leading names of the 20th and 21st centuries, notably Yayoi Kusama, Banksy, KAWS, Gerhard Richter, Julian Opie, Peter Doig and Bridget Riley.
