Cézanne to Warhol: Masterpieces lead Koller's November-December auctions in Zurich
Paul Cézanne’s ‘L’après-midi à Naples’ from 1876–77. (lot 3216, CHF 450 000 / 650 000).

ZURICH.- Works from the entire spectrum of Modern & Contemporary Art will be offered at Koller’s November/December auctions, from Cézanne to Pomodoro, including artists such as Pablo Picasso, Yves Tanguy, Egon Schiele and Andy Warhol. The Jewellery and Watches auctions feature historic pieces from the royal house of Borbón y Braganza, as well as creations by renowned makers such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Rolex.

Paul Cézanne’s ‘L’après-midi à Naples’ from 1876–77 belongs to a small group of erotic paintings which the artist created in response to Edouard Manet’s infamous ‘Olympia’. Its first owner was none other than Ambroise Vollard, the visionary gallerist who launched not only Cézanne’s career but also those of the Impressionists (lot 3216, CHF 450 000 / 650 000). A surrealist work by Yves Tanguy (lot 3258, CHF 280 000 / 380 000) translates the artist’s fascination with the sea into a world between dream and reality. Egon Schiele’s ‘Sitzende Frau (Adele Harms)’ depicts his future sister-in-law and lover, and has remained in the same Viennese private collection for the past forty years (lot 3244, CHF 250 000 / 350 000). Further highlights include an early landscape by Francis Picabia (lot 3225, CHF 200 000 / 300 000) and two bronze sculptures by Rembrandt Bugatti: ‘Deux léopards, l’un derrière l’autre’ (lot 3230, CHF 180 000 / 250 000) and ‘Cerf en marche’ (lot 3229, CHF 100 000 / 150 000).

An enigmatic work by Arnaldo Pomodoro dominates the selection of Post-War & Contemporary Art on offer, not only by its monumental scale, but through its profound complexity as well as its significant place in the Italian artist’s late oeuvre (lot 3457, CHF 800 000 / 1 200 000). Several important works by Andy Warhol will also be presented, including an intimate portrait of his acquaintance Patty Raynes with her young son (lot 3423, CHF 180 000 / 280 000), the mesmerising ‘Grevy’s Zebra’ (lot 3677, CHF 60 000 / 80 000), and a double-signed portrait of Mick Jagger (lot 3681, CHF 80 000 / 100 000). A highlight among the Prints & Multiples is Pablo Picasso’s colour linocut ‘Buste de femme d’après Cranach le Jeune’, 1958, from an edition of 15 artist’s proofs (lot 3621, CHF 350 000 / 500 000).

Among the selection of Swiss Art, a stunning panorama of the Engadine mountain range framing the Val Bregaglia by Giovanni Giacometti (lot 3029, CHF 300 000 / 500 000) will be offered alongside a view of the Petit Salève near Geneva by Ferdinand Hodler (lot 3026, CHF 350 000 / 500 000), as well as two coastal landscapes by Félix Vallotton: ‘Vue d'Honfleur, le soir’ (lot 3052, CHF 250 000 / 400 000) and ‘Coin de port le soir’ (lot 3046, CHF 250 000 / 350 000).

In the Jewellery auction, a group of historic pieces from the noble house of Borbón y Braganza will be complemented by 20th-century masterpieces by Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Bulgari. A Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona wristwatch in original condition is certain to excite collectors of rare timepieces (lot 2838, CHF 120 000 / 200 000). The Asian Art auction presents a collection of Tibetan bronzes from the 11th–15th centuries, many of which were acquired at Koller’s Asian Art auctions in the 1980s and early 1990s – an eloquent demonstration of the movement of Asian art from the Far East to Europe, and now often returning to its countries of origin.
