NEW YORK, NY.- In the wake of the success of the collection of Leonard A. Lauder on Tuesday evening, further exceptional collections were presented for sale in Sotheby’s new home at the Breuer tonight.

The “white glove” auction of The Cindy and Jay Pritzker Collection set the tone for the evening and saw Vincent van Gogh’s Piles de romans parisiens et roses dans une verre (Romans parisiens) achieve $62.7m. The excitement carried through into the next sale of some 24 works from ‘Exquisite Corpus’ - a once-in-a-lifetime collection of Surrealist art. Frida Kahlo’s El sueño (La cama) led the offering, selling for $54.7m - an auction record for any work by a woman artist.

The single owner auctions were followed in turn by a sale of Modern art, at the heart of which were works from the collections of Matthew and Carolyn Bucksbaum and Geri Brawerman, both of which were 100% sold tonight.

Replete with masterpieces, this evening's auctions together realized $304.6m, bringing the running total for the week at Sotheby’s to $1.1bn. The results also bring sales of Modern Art at Sotheby’s so far this week to an all-time-high for the category - $796.5m.

• Vincent van Gogh’s Piles de romans parisiens et roses dans une verre (Romans parisiens) achieved $62.7m (est. in the region of $40m), setting a new record for a van Gogh still life painting at auction after 7 minutes of bidding across 5 bidders.

• Henri Matisse’s Léda et le cygne sold for $10.4m (est. $7-10m). One of very few architectural pieces by the artist (the majority of which are all in public spaces or museums), this was the first example of its kind ever to come to auction, setting a high benchmark .

• Max Beckmann’s Der Wels (The Catfish), which he painted in Paris in 1929 after a summer in the Italian coastal town of Viareggio, sold for $9.2m ($5-7m) after being chased by 5 bidders.

• Camille Pissarro’s Bords de l’Oise à Pontoise, dating to the beginning of the artist’s second sojourn in Pontoise in 1872 (a period considered among his most innovative), achieved $2.5m after being pursued by 4 bidders (est. $1.2-1.8m).

• Félix Vallotton, Femme couchée dormant (Le Sommeil), one of the artists most striking interior scenes – depicting his wife, Gabrielle Rodrigues-Henriques, shortly after their marriage in May of 1899 – reached $2.8m after intense back and forth bidding between 6 collectors on the phone and in the room (est. $1.8-2.5m).

• Wassily Kandinsky’s 1960 watercolor, Ins violett (Into Violet), from the height of the artist’s Bauhaus period, was pursued by 5 bidders to $2.4m (est: $700,000-1,000,000).

EXQUISITE CORPUS:

• Sale total: $98.1m ($66.7-98.9M)

• 100% sold, 67% of works sell above high estimate

• New auction records: Frida Kahlo, Dorothea Tanning, Wolfgang Paalen, and Hans Bellmer who broke his record twice in one night (lot 11 and then 21).

• Deep bidding for works by: Lot 1 Hugo (7 bidders), Lot 9 Sage (6 bidders), Lot 11 Bellmer (6 bidders), Lot 22 Magritte (5 bidders).

TOP LOTS:

• Frida Kahlo’s El sueño (La cama) established a new auction record for the artist, and the record for any work by a woman artist at auction, achieving $54.7m

• The painting had remained in the same private collection for 45 years after it was purchased from Sotheby's in 1980 for $51,000.

• Salvador Dali’s jewel-like work Symbiose de la tête aux coquillages, sells for $4.2m (est.$2- 3m).

• Óscar Domínguez’s La Machine à écrire more than doubled its high estimate, achieving $3.7m (est. $1-1.5m)

• Paul Delvaux’s dreamlike Composition, sold for $3.6m (est. $2.5-3.5m)

• Dorothea Tanning’s otherworldly Interior with Sudden Joy brought $3.2m (est. $2-3M), setting a new record for the artist at auction (previous record $2.3m).

• Jean Dubuffet, Restaurant Rougeit II, sells for $7.5m (est. $6-8m)

• Wifredo Lam, Ídolo (Oyá/Divinité de l'air et de la mort), sells for $7.4m (est. $6-8m), now the second highest price for the artist at auction.

• Claude Monet, Vue de Rouen depuis la côte Sainte-Catherine from 1892, painted during his visit to the city, was pursued by 6 bidders before realizing $7.4m (est. $3-4m). The work has been in the Schlumberger collection for over 60 years and is appearing at auction for the first time.

• Edgar Degas’ Trois danseuses achieves $5.8m after being chased by 5 bidders (est. $3.5-5m).
