ICHIHARA CITY.- The Boso Triennale 2027 will launch an open call for proposals from Sunday, March 1 to Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

Located in the Boso region, where diverse cultures have been cultivated over time, the Boso Triennale 2027 will be organized by Chiba Prefecture, Ichihara City, Kisarazu City, and Otaki Town as a platform for community-based development through art and culture. The Triennale aims to nurture local industries, culture, art, and music while engaging in dialogue with international perspectives.

Stretching across Chiba Prefecture, the Boso region has long held a significant place in Japan’s history. Historically, the area functioned as a political and cultural hub of the Kanto region, encompassing former castle towns, and was once home to ancient burial mound–building cultures. Geologically, the Boso Peninsula also played a role in the formation of the Japanese archipelago. In the modern era, the region has grown into a major industrial and residential area, while preserving its satoyama landscapes and historic environments, making it a microcosm of Japan itself.

Visitors will journey through the Boso region by train, car, bicycle, or on foot, encountering artworks and music performances along the way. Under the concept of “International Art Factory,” the Triennale highlights artistic creation and making through artist residencies, symposia, and workshops. General Producer Kobayashi Takeshi will lead music performances inspired by the local environment. Collaborations with local food producers will also generate new culinary experiences and encourage interaction with the community.

The open call invites proposals for artworks, performances, and projects. Submissions may be made as open proposals with a preferred site, as proposals for one of the designated sites, or as artist-in-residence proposals.

To help applicants better understand the aims and context of the Triennale, a site visit will be organized. This one-day bus tour includes visits to candidate sites as well as a lecture by General Director Kitagawa Fram. For those unable to attend in person, recorded videos will be made available.

We welcome proposals that highlight the unique history, culture, and rich natural environment of the Boso region and that contribute to raising international awareness of the Boso Triennale.
