From the Seine to Central Park: 19th & 20th Century Art is at Swann March 12

NEW YORK, NY.- The March 12, 2026, sale of 19th & 20th Century Art at Swann will feature an engaging group of original artwork, prints, and sculpture from European, American, and Latin American artistic traditions and movements.

Leading the auction are European original works with Max Liebermann’s Bij de Hoefsmid (At the Blacksmith), oil on board ($30,000-$50,000), Alfred Heber Hutty’s Early Snow, oil on canvas, circa 1920 ($12,000-18,000); and Édouard Louis Dubufe’s Portrait d’un frère et d’une sœur, oil on canvas, 1857 ($10,000-15,000).

Original American art highlights include Lyonel Feininger’s 1937 crayon drawing The Golden Gate ($12,000-18,000), Joseph Yoakum’s 1966 pastel drawing Lake Occachobia Near SeeBeriang Florida ($8,000-12,000), and his circa 1968 watercolor Near Halhul Palestine ($8,000-12,000), Paul Cornoyer’s 1909 oil-on-canvas New England Town ($8,000-12,000), Herman Maril’s 1966-677 oil-on-canvas Patterns ($6,000-9,000), and John B. Lear Jr.’s 1988 watercolor Shoreline Plumage ($2,000-3,000). American Impressionists are led by the charming circa-1917, oil-on-canvas Beach Scene by Ruth Alice Temple Anderson ($15,000-20,000).

Additional American print highlights include Gustave Baumann’s The Town Gossips, color woodcut, 1910, Adolf Dehn’s Central Park Winter, color lithograph, 1965 ($1,200-1,800), and Peggy Bacon’s Promenade Deck, drypoint, 1920 ($1,000-1,500), as well as works by Julius Bloch, Milton Clark Avery, Will Barnet, and Mervin Jules.

The sale includes several beautiful landscapes, including two watercolors by the British artist Edward James, known for his scenes of Bermuda in the mid-nineteenth century. Paul Signac's lovely Pont Royal – Matin lilas, watercolor, 1910 ($15,000-20,000) depicts a morning along the Seine.

Important and painterly prints are also included in the sale, including Kees van Dongen's portrait Le Collier de Perles, lithograph, 1924 ($7,000-10,000), Marc Chagall’s Découverte de Daphnis par Lamon, color lithograph, 1961 ($12,000-18,000), and color pochoirs from Pablo Picasso's Dix Pochoirs portfolio. Other offerings from our March sale will include original prints by modern masters such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pablo Picasso, and works by late twentieth century artists such as Enrico Baj and William Christopher.

Exhibition hours are 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, and Monday, March 9, through Wednesday, March 11.
