LONDON, ENGLAND.- The Pastel Societys annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries (near Trafalgar Square) is always a rare treat of the best in contemporary pastel work. Showing from 28 February to 11 March 2007, this prestigious exhibition should be a must on everyones exhibition calendar.
The Pastel Society UK is recognised as foremost in its field, showing the work of leading contemporary artists as well as encouraging work by new artists yet to be established. Past members and exhibitors of the society include Brangwyn, Degas, Dame Laura Knight, Sickert and Whistler, to name but a few. Todays members also represent exceptional contemporary talent including Honorary members Anthony Eyton, Tom Phillips and Paula Rego.
The exhibition will be opened on Tuesday 27 February by Anthony J.Lester, the well known art critic, writer and broadcaster. He will also present a new prize The Anthony J Lester Art Critic Award.
Amongst the special features will be a drawing by John Watton of Captain Jim Rogers done whilst in Colditz in 1941. Also look out for a special display of unframed work on a Spring theme, donated by members for our fund raising auction. Bargains can be had!
Today, artists use the pastel medium for its vibrant colour, vitality and immediacy, and a wide variety of work, both conventional and adventurous will be on show. Featured will be work in both soft and oil pastel, fine drawings in pencil, conte and charcoal, as well as some in mixed media. Visitors can be confident of seeing a variety of approaches All the work is for sale.
During the exhibition seven workshops will be held at the Mall Galleries including a Beginners Day, and in April there will be four workshops at Farnham Adult Education Centre .
The ever popular Art Event Evening will take place in the gallery on Thursday 1 March (6 8.30pm) where Members will be demonstrating and discussing their work.
The exhibition opens on 28 February and runs until 11 March 10am 5pm daily (closes at 3pm on final day).
