NEW ORLEANS.- The French Government and the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) announce Femme, femme, femme: Paintings of Women in French Society from Daumier to Picasso from the Museums of France. This unprecedented exhibition of 83 works from the Louvre, the Musee dOrsay and 43 other legendary museums throughout France was organized by the Ministére français de la Culture et de la CommunicationDirection des musées de France and La Réunion des musées nationaux. It will be shown exclusively at NOMA beginning March 4, 2007.
This exhibition is a coup for the art community and a wonderful value for visitors to New Orleans, said E. John Bullard, director of the New Orleans Museum of Art. In order to see the paintings grouped in this exhibition at NOMA an art lover would typically have to travel to 45 different French museums.
Femme, femme, femme is the fulfillment of a promise made to New Orleans just two months after Hurricane Katrina as the French Minister of Culture and Communication, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, and the President/Director of the Louvre, Henri Loyrette, led a delegation of French diplomats and art curators on a visit to the city and NOMA. The French commissioners of this exhibition are Madame Danièle Giraudy, honorary director of the Musées de Marseilles and Francis Ribemont, director of the Musée des Beauxs-Arts de Rennes.
With paintings by a wide range of artists, including Renoir, Manet, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec, Femme, femme, femme celebrates the emergence of the modern woman. This evolution of womens roles is grouped by five themes ranging from domestic duties and intellectual pursuits, from recreation to rural labor.
The exhibition is presented by Freeport-McMoRan Foundation. Additional support is provided by Lakeside Shopping Center and The Feil Organization; The Helis Foundation; Blanchard and Company, Inc.; The Booth-Bricker Fund; Capital One; Chevron; Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitevent, Carrère & Denègre L.L.P.; Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation; Office of the Lieutenant Governor/Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism; Sheraton New Orleans Hotel; WDSU News Channel 6; Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport; Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation; Lloyd A. Fry Foundation; The Champagne Veuve Clicquot Collection; and The Ruby K. Worner Charitable Trust. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. Femme, femme, femme is supported in France by Total.
