ROANOKE, VA.- Gifts, an exhibition of works given to the Art Museum that have not yet been on view, will remain on view at the Art Museum through July 29. The exhibition includes three new masterworks of American painting acquired with funds provided by the Horace G. Fralin Charitable Trust that were unveiled.
Many of the gifts to the Art Museum which comprise the exhibition were inspired by the promise of the new Art Museum facility. Works will be featured in a context with other pieces that illuminate their importance and add additional dimensions, showing an artists technique and working method, artists they influenced or worked alongside, or a works artistic, social or historic significance.
Artists in the exhibition include nationally and regionally known artists, emerging artists and household names. Gifts showcases a stylistic range from very traditional to completely abstract, 19th century through early 21st century works, and a variety of media such as paintings, sculpture, photographs, prints, decorative arts, and fine craft.
A related installation, on view through May 6 in an adjacent gallery, focuses on donors through the history of the Art Museum whose gifts have had an especially large impact on the permanent collection and on the direction of the Art Museum.
The Art Museum is thrilled to present these remarkable gifts through this special exhibition, said Georganne Bingham, executive director of the Art Museum. Gifts not only allows the Art Museum to honor our generous donors, but it also enables us to offer the public a small taste of what is to come in the new Art Museum and to celebrate the promise of the new building.
SunTrust Bank is the presenting sponsor and Woods Rogers PLC is the major sponsor of the Art Museums presentation of Gifts. Additional support is provided by Curtis Publishing.
