5 examples of Iconic bottle branding

A beautiful bottle can be the perfect centrepiece for a bar or breakfast table.

And some brands have mastered the art of instantly recognisable packaging. A logo, a colour - even the silhouette of their product.

These are just five of the most iconic bottle designs that never get old.

1. Coca Cola

It’s no surprise that Coca Cola tops the list of most iconic bottle designs of all time.

Designed by the Root Glass Company in 1915, the shapely glass bottle has enjoyed over a hundred years as the world’s most popular soft drink.

Coca Cola first introduced plastic bottles in the 1970s, and these are now far more common, available in any corner shop or supermarket. But the original glass bottle design is still hugely popular, sold in over 110 countries - and honestly, who doesn’t love a nice chilled bottle of Coke?

2. Jack Daniels

The world’s best known bourbon introduced their square bottles at a time when whiskey was typically sold in barrels.

But in the 1890s, after a meeting with a bottle manufacturer to find the perfect match for the amber liquid, Mr Daniel settled on “a square bottle for a square shooter.”

3. Angostura bitters

Used in cocktails such as the Old Fashioned, the Whiskey Sour and the Manhattan, Angostura bitters is a staple of any bar.

But the bottle is instantly recognisable for its too-big label which drowns the bottle beneath it.

This charming flaw dates back to a mistake made in the 1870s, when two brothers took over from their father’s company. One was in charge of producing the bottle itself, and the other in charge of making the label.

But due to a failure in communication, the sizes didn’t match up, and rather than correct the mistake, they decided to keep it.

While this predates the evolution of the label for functionality - such as the ‘peel and reveal’ style from Positive ID Labelling that frees up essential information space for design and branding - it’s a prime example of how you can get creative with eye-catching characteristics.

4. Chanel No. 5

Though it has evolved over years, the best-selling perfume of all time is instantly recognisable on shelves and dressing tables.

The rectangular design with its minimalist label is transparent, simple yet ornate, and the original diamond-shaped stopper was inspired by Paris's Place Vendôme.

In 2024 the brand introduced the limited edition ‘drop bottle’, whose pebble shape dispensed ‘just a few drops at a time’ - taking inspiration from a famous quote by Marilyn Monroe.

5. Heinz ketchup

Heinz’s well-known 57 logo marks every bottle of their distinctive condiment.

Like Coca Cola, the traditional glass bottles have largely given way to the now-popular ‘squeezy’ bottle.

But one of the most unique aspects of the design is the change made in March 2023, when Heinz cracked down on a common restaurant practice that was costing the company money.

They found that many eateries were refilling the Heinz ketchup bottles with cheaper off-brand alternatives, so they came up with an ingenious solution, creating a new red border around the label that matched the colour of their own product perfectly.

That meant that if the bottle had been refilled, customers would be able to tell that the contents were not what they were promised.

As the saying goes, “It has to be Heinz.”

These are just five of the greatest bottle designs that are still sold across the world today.
