GÖTEBORG, SWEDEN.- The Göteborg Museum of Art presents Art Feminism KONSTFEMINISM, on view through April 22, 2007. A little over thirty years ago a group of women artists launched a new trend-setting aesthetic which introduced fresh questions and themes into the world of art. KONSTFEMINISM is an exhibition of feminist strategies and their effects on art as witnessed by the work of some two hundred artists in Sweden from the 1970s to today.
Artists of a feminist inclination call in question accepted value hierarchies and aim to find new emancipating strategies. One method has been to infiltrate the established art world by pandering to the demands of the art market while at the same time criticising by their choice of topics the very system within which they operate. These artists have also striven to reach the general public in new ways, including public demonstrations.
KONSTFEMINISM covers a wide span of both materials and techniques and embraces a broad range of subject matter anything from everyday realism and genitalia to dreams and political visions. The feminist element is not dependent on the sex of the artist or on any stated feminist agenda, even if many of their works treat of the norms and injustices associated with sex and genus.
Konstfeminism: the collective term for feminist analysis and activism in the field of art as applied by Riksutställningar (the Swedish government organisation responsible for administration of travelling exhibitions), Dunkers Kulturhus, Helsingborg, and the Liljevalchs konsthall, Stockholm. The term refers to the art works themselves, to the artists, the general public, institutions, gallery owners and administrators, researchers, journalists etc.
Feminism: The view according to which women are subordinate to men and that this state of affairs should be righted. A host of varied sub-movements have arisen, resulting in the plural term feminisms being frequently used.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Dunkers Kulturhus, Liljevalchs konsthall and Riksutställningar.
