Swann Galleries unveils masterworks for Spring Old Master Through Modern Prints sale
Albrecht Dürer, The Virgin and Child with the Monkey, engraving, circa 1498. Estimate $30,000 to $50,000.

NEW YORK, NY.- An array spanning styles and periods, from the fifteenth century through the mid-twentieth century comprises Swann Galleries robust spring sale on Old Master Through Modern Prints this year on April 16.

Standout early offerings include a remarkable example of Albrecht Dürer’s circa 1498 engraving Virgin and Child with the Monkey ($30,000-50,000), and a fine impression of Rembrandt van Rijn’s circa 1641 etching The Triumph of Mordecai ($15,000-20,000), amongst other works by Hendrick Goltzius and Giovanni B. Piranesi.

The rare complete portfolio with six lithographs Hommage à Goya, 1885, by Odilon Redon is a highlight of the nineteenth century section ($20,000-30,000), along with leading figures of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, such as the 1889 zincograph Les Laveuses by Paul Gauguin ($4,800).

Egon Schiele’s Kümmernis, drypoint, 1914 ($8,000-12,000), is a highlight of the Modern European presentation, as well as Paul Cézanne’s Les Baigneurs (grande planche), color lithograph, circa 1896-98 ($15,000-20,000) which also includes the likes of Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso. Two early etching and drypoints by Marc Chagall, An der Staffelei, 1922 ($3,000-5,000) and Die Liebenden, 1922 ($3,000-5,000) from his early series Mein Leiben, are also included.

Important American prints from the first half of the twentieth century, include Stow Wengenroth’s striking lithograph Manhattan Gateway, 1948 ($8,000-12,000) an atmospheric portrayal of the Brooklyn Bridge walkway. It stands alongside other exemplars of Modern American printmaking, with Martin Lewis’s Circus Night, drypoint, 1933 ($15,000-20,000), as well as works by Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Samuel L. Margolies and others.

Exhibition hours are 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, and Monday, April 13, through Wednesday, April 15. Bidding is available through online platforms, absentee, the phone, and live in-person. Live online bidding platforms will be the Swann Galleries Wedsite, Invaluable, and Live Auctioneers.
