DALLAS, TX.- Heritage Auctions’ April 8 Artists at Work: Photographs from the Collection of Milton Esterow Showcase Auction realized $50,471, achieving an exceptional 99.99% sell-through rate and drawing participation from 331 bidders across 104 lots.

The single-owner sale followed Heritage’s larger Photographs Signature® Auction and continued the momentum generated by material from the collection of Milton Esterow (1928–2025), the influential journalist and longtime publisher of ARTnews. While selections from Esterow’s collection appeared in the Signature auction, Artists at Work offered a more focused and accessible opportunity for collectors, reflecting the Showcase format’s emphasis on approachable price points.

Offered entirely without reserve, the auction presented a compelling survey of 20th-century artists captured in their studios and creative environments by leading photographers including Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Rudy Burckhardt and Robert Doisneau. The results underscored sustained demand for material with strong art historical resonance and distinguished provenance.

“The response to Artists at Work really speaks to the strength of Esterow’s eye and the appeal of this format,” said Laura Paterson, Heritage’s Director of Consignment for Photographs. “Collectors recognized both the historical importance of these images and the opportunity to acquire works with such meaningful connections to ARTnews and the artists it championed.”

Leading the sale was Rudy Burckhardt’s Alex Katz: Selected Studies (41 works) from the 1970s–80s, which realized $3,000. The group of gelatin silver prints reflects Burckhardt’s longstanding engagement with Katz and offers a rare, extended look at the artist through the photographer’s lens.

Works by Robert Doisneau also performed strongly, led by Le Pain du Picasso (1952) , which brought $2,500, and Fernand Léger dans ses œuvres (1954), which achieved $1,750. Both images exemplify Doisneau’s ability to capture artists with a sense of intimacy and quiet humanity.

A 1955 portrait of Jasper Johns in his New York studio by Robert Rauschenberg realized $2,375, documenting a pivotal moment in postwar American art and the close creative dialogue between the two artists. Another grouping by Rudy Burckhardt, Donald Judd: Selected Studies (25 works) from the 1960s, sold for $2,000 and further highlighted the sale’s emphasis on artists observed within their working environments.

Drawn from a collection that began in the 1970s, the works in Artists at Work reflect Esterow’s deep engagement with the art world and his commitment to visual storytelling. Many of the photographs were originally used to illustrate articles in ARTnews, the publication he led for more than four decades, and together they offer a vivid record of the cultural figures and moments that shaped 20th-century art.

As one of several planned offerings from Esterow’s collection in 2026, the success of the Showcase auction reinforces the enduring appeal of photographs that bridge documentary insight and artistic legacy, particularly when guided by a collector of such discernment.
