INDIANAPOLIS, IN.- Opening on May 8, 2026, BODY / BEYOND: Fashion That Transforms will feature 25 garments spanning 1950s couture to avant-garde ensembles of the 2010s, these designs blur the boundary between fashion and sculpture, function and fantasy. They invite you to look closely and to reconsider the way the body can be seen.

The fashion collection has been expanded with the acquisition of three new works. Highlights include a standout sequined blazer from Maison Margiela’s 2008 Spring/Summer collection and one of Jean Paul Gautier’s iconic cone-cup dresses, most famously worn by Madonna during her 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour. These acquisitions will be featured alongside designs by Dior, Halston (an Indiana native), and Miyake from the IMA Collection in a dynamic, original arrangement.

The exhibition highlights garments that alter, heighten, or otherwise morph into the human form through innovative construction and detailed craft. These garments invite guests to engage their imagination and delve into the escapism fashion offers, as well as consider how fashion can go beyond clothing to become a commentative and stimulating work of art.

“This exhibition offers a thrilling overview of global fashion of the last 75 years. A combination of long-time favorites and new acquisitions, the show highlights the depth and strength of the IMA’s collection and our commitment to exhibiting the most innovative works of our time,” said Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, Michael Vetter, Ph.D.

The Gerald and Dorit Paul Galleries will be filled with more than BODY / BEYOND—the exhibition will also feature a curated playlist of music from the original runway shows where these extraordinary works debuted, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the runway experience right here at Newfields.

Museum guests can step into the creative design process at an interactive studio featuring design sketches, textile samples and color swatches; then, drape, shape and fold fabrics to create their own stunning miniature garment at the making table.

Past the sparkling sequins and sculpted silhouettes; BODY / BEYOND invites guests to reflect on how fashion and clothing influence and shape their ideas of beauty, self and identity. Each work underscores fashion’s potential as a powerful tool for creative expression—one that expands how we see and define ourselves. The exhibition closes on October 18, 2026.
