WALNUT, CA.- Mt. San Antonio College Art Gallery presents Eva Kolosvary-Stupler: A Retrospective Exhibition, on view April 3-May 17, 2007. Autobiographical Statement of Eva Kolosvary-Stupler: I was born in Budapest. As a child I wanted to pick up other people's throw-aways, but was not allowed to do so. After high school graduation, still a teenager, I emigrated to Switzerland, the cleanest country on earth, and where you never could get in contact with junk. Five years later I arrived in the United States and eagerly started recycling, even before it became popular, hoarding rusty metals, weathered plywood boards and other unwanted, but interesting objects, keeping them in my yard. I also started to raid swap-meets and junk stores; my house went through a metamorphosis when I applied those found objects to its walls, doors, entry way and fences. In the meantime I'd earned an MFA at California State University at Long Beach and started to organize the collected objects into art works by assembling them into new meanings completely different from their former utilitarian past.
At first I used old wooden or metal boxes, needing the containment of an already existing confinement. Then the boxes began to extend outward, opening up, both creatively and physically. They evolved from static to dynamic statements. While the earlier freestanding pieces only had a frontal view, soon they became more expressive, with multiple views so that the viewer must circle them to understand their fuller meaning and to appreciate the subtlety of the details. I continue to work on smaller wall-pieces as well as three-dimensional pedestaled assemblages to be viewed in the round.
