STOCKHOLM.- Public Art Agency Sweden is announcing a new opportunity for artists to submit their interest for a sketch proposal. It concerns a permanent artwork in the Admiralty House's outdoor environment on Skeppsholmen. A collaboration between Public Art Agency Sweden and the National Property Board of Sweden.
Skeppsholmen is Stockholms cultural island, known for its waterfront setting, historic architecture, and vibrant arts scene. Home to the iconic public works by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely, several museums such as Moderna Museet, and the Royal Institute of Art, it attracts visitors from around the world throughout the year.
As part of the National Urban Park, the environment is protected for its significant cultural-historical values. The Admiralty House was built for the Navy's Board of Directors and was completed in 1650. Since its inception, the building has both changed its appearance and served various purposes such as the National Archives, grain warehouses, barracks and offices. In connection with the reconstruction of the Admiralty House and adaptation for the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, a commission is announced for an outdoors public art project.
The curatorial vision focuses on Skeppsholmen as a historical landscape shaped by its various connections to the outside world. A place where human movements have manifested themselves in park environments, building history and contemporary cultural exchanges. Through the new artwork, the island's diversity of public art is complemented by a contemporary work that becomes yet another layer of time in the island's history. Skeppsholmen will be given a new landmark with possible locations on both the north and south sides of the Admiralty House.
The process is carried out in two steps. Initially, professional artists/artist groups are invited to submit their interest in developing a sketch proposal for the artwork (submit a tender). After an evaluation of the expressions of interest received, two (2) artists are awarded sketch contracts with an option for implementation (i.e. with the possibility of continued implementation assignment).
Submission interest period is open from 2026-05-29 to 2026-09-10. Please read further information at Public Art Agency Swedens web page about the announcement and details on how to submit your interest. https://publicartagencysweden.com/new-sketch-assignment-for-artists-on-skeppsholmen-in-the-outdoor-environment-of-amiralitetshuset/
