FALLS CHURCH, VA.- Original paintings by the renowned African American abstract painter and sculptor Sam Gilliam (1933-2022) and German-born American landscape artist William Wendt (1865-1946) will headline Quinn’s Thursday, June 18 online-only Fine & Decorative Arts Auction. The sale contains more than 500 high-quality expertly-curated lots of Asian, American, European and Modern arts.



Sam Gilliam was originally associated with the Washington (DC) School of color field artists and went on to build a distinguished career, breaking ground in 1972 as one of the first African Americans to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale. On June 18, Quinn’s will auction Gilliam’s acrylic-on-canvas and enamel-on-aluminum painting titled To Braque with Ovals. The 1982 work is signed, dated and titled on verso and measures 72¾ inches by 29½ inches. It has a pre-sale estimate of $40,000-$60,000.

William Wendt, whose work is more closely aligned with the Arts and Crafts Movement in California than the French or American Impressionists of the early 20th century, is known as the “dean of Southern California landscape painters.” His circa-1915 oil-on-canvas titled California Coast is signed and dated at lower right and measures 25 inches by 30 inches (sight). In Quinn’s upcoming sale, it has been assigned a $30,000-$50,000 estimate.



A Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) gilt lacquered bronze Bodhisattva (in Buddhism, a person who has attained, or is striving for, enlightenment), 23 inches tall by 15 inches wide, is expected to settle in the $20,000-$30,000 range. The deity, possibly Mahasthamaprapta, wears a foliate crown with the kalasha on the front and flowing robes while sitting dhyanasana with the proper right hand raised in the karanamudra.



An acrylic-on-canvas abstract composition created by Gene Davis (Washington, DC, 1920-1985) in 1970 exemplifies the artist’s signature exploration of color interval, repetition and visual rhythm. It features a rhythmic arrangement of narrow, multicolor vertical stripes against a warm tan ground. The 24-inch by 30-inch (sight) work is signed and dated and carries an estimate of $10,000-$15,000.



A circa-17th century Continental School oil-on-joined-wood-panel allegorical or religious scene, with a saintly male figure (possibly John the Baptist), a richly attired female figure, winged attendants and a distant battle scene, is impressively sized at 48 inches by 40 inches. With the elaborate giltwood frame, it measures 60½ inches by 53 inches). The costume and facial types suggest the late Mannerist to early Baroque period. Old transport and dealer labels are retained on verso. The estimate is $6,000-$9,000.

A circa-1710 Queen Anne giltwood girandole mirror of beveled, double-arched giltwood with glass S-scroll candle sconces and a period mirror plate measures 35 by 21 inches. It should realize $7,000-$9,000 at auction.



A late-18th-century Strasbourg faience glazed cabbage tureen and cover, 6¼ inches tall by 12 inches wide and purchased from Sotheby’s in Zurich, Switzerland in 1997, has an estimate of $6,000-$8,000.



A circa-1960 kinetic art panel by Frank Malina (American/French, 1912-1981) is titled Tableau Mobile. It is marked on verso Tableau Mobile/ Malina/ Paris 892/60/ 100 Volts/ 50 or 60 cycles/ 90 watts, and comes with operating instructions. The work measures 33 inches by 49 inches and is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.



Depicting flora and fauna, a pair of 19th-century six-panel folding screens, after Nagasawa Rosetsu (Japan, 1755-1799), measure 68½ inches by 24½ inches and 68¾ inches by 25¼ inches, respectively. Born to a family of low-ranking Samurai, Rosetsu was a disciple of the Maruyama School and was active as a painter during Japan’s Edo period. The pair of panels is expected to sell for $4,000-$6,000.



A pair of English George II Elizabeth Pantin Buteux Godfrey (English, circa 1700-1771) figural candlesticks in the French Rococo style, having a female form column on a circular base with repousse and chased flowers and lions-heads, has an estimate of $3,000-$4,000. Each candlestick stands 10¾ inches high and is marked with "EG" makers and London 1751 hallmarks. The total weight for the pair is 50.51ozt.



A bronze portrait plaque of George Washington by Henry Kirke Brown (Mass., 1814-1886), signed and dated H.K. Brown Sculptor June 1852, 9-7/8 inches tall, is expected to reach $2,000-$4,000.

The rest of the catalog features an array of goods consisting primarily of consignments from prominent northern Virginia estates and collections. Within the selection of finely-crafted European silver are Brandimarte Firenze fruit cups, a French Etienne August Coutois drageoir, Polish Szmul Szkarlat candlesticks, and a Russian Fabergé niello box.



European and Modern furniture and decoratives include a Gillows-style Regency desk, a Grand Tour ancient marble basin, a Peter Lovig teak desk, and an Omersa leather rhino-form ottoman. A collection of George Washington memorabilia includes an after Gilbert Stuart watercolor brooch, and an inaugural portrait miniature brooch.

A fine selection of 19th-century European paintings, 20th-century landscapes, and works from American artists will be offered. There is also a grouping of Native American and Pre-Columbian art and objects, including works by Carmelita Dunlap, Popovi Da, and Maria Martinez.

There will be no in-person floor bidding for their June 18, 2026 auction, but Quinn’s Auction Galleries invites bidders to participate live via the Internet through LiveAuctioneers or Invaluable, with absentee bidding on HiBid.
