THE HAGUE.- Runners in The Hague can discover the city in a new way this summer, as the Mauritshuis and its partner Nationale-Nederlanden have launched three running routes that connect art, movement, and the urban landscape.

The routes, measuring approximately 5, 10, and 15 kilometers, guide runners past large-scale street art murals located throughout the city. The project brings together the Mauritshuis’ historic collection with contemporary public art, offering a sporty open-air encounter with works inspired by some of the museum’s best-known masterpieces.

Nationale-Nederlanden, also known as the main sponsor of running events including the NN CPC Loop in The Hague and the NN Marathon The Hague, partnered with the Mauritshuis to create the routes as a way to encourage both cultural discovery and physical activity.

Each route leads participants past murals created by six street artists, who each drew inspiration from a masterpiece in the Mauritshuis collection. Together, the works form a freely accessible open-air gallery spread across The Hague.

“With these routes, we are literally putting art in motion,” said Martine Gosselink, general director of the Mauritshuis. “Looking at art and running have more in common than you might think: both give energy and contribute to your well-being.”

Mariëlle Krouwel, Chief Marketing Officer of NN Group, said the initiative reflects Nationale-Nederlanden’s broader commitment to well-being. “Through our partnerships, NN wants to contribute to a healthy mind in a healthy body,” she said. “As a partner of the Mauritshuis, we make art accessible to everyone, while through our running events we encourage people to get moving. These new running routes bring those two worlds together in a unique way.”

Runners can choose from three distances, with the longest route of approximately 15 kilometers passing all of the Mauritshuis murals in the city. The routes can be downloaded from the Mauritshuis website or imported into a navigation app or sports watch. Participants can also create their own route linking the artworks.

For those who want to learn more while on the move, the museum recommends listening to its podcast, The Secret of the Mauritshuis, during the run.

Among the murals included on the routes are works by Nadia van Luijk, inspired by Jan Davidsz de Heem’s Vase of Flowers, and BEYOND, inspired by Johannes Vermeer’s Diana and Her Nymphs.

The Mauritshuis is also inviting runners to share their experience on Instagram. Five Mauritshuis goodie bags worth €100 will be raffled among participants. To enter, runners must post a photo or message about their run by July 15 using a public Instagram profile, tag @mauritshuis_museum, and use the hashtag #mauritshuismurals.
