DENVER, CO.- The Denver Art Museum was named one of five New Wonders of the World by Condé Nast Traveler magazine in its April 2007 issue, which hit newsstands this week. The Museums 146,000-square-foot, titanium clad Frederic C. Hamilton Building, which opened in October 2006, was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. The five New Wonders of the World, spanning three continents from the American West to Far East Asia, join Libeskind with Le Corbusier, Frank Gehry, Benjamin Warner, and Murphy/Jahn Architects.
In addition to the New Wonders of the World selection, Time Critic Richard Lacayo wrote that the Denver Art Museum belonged on the American Institute of Architects top 150 works of architecture of all time. These recent honors come in the wake of overwhelming international media attention, including accolades in Architectural Record, AP, Apollo, The Boston Globe, Bloomberg, Financial Times, The New Yorker, Newsweek and Time. Excerpts from these include:
Architectural Record, Suzanne Stevens: The building by all counts is an exciting and successful addition to the citys downtown.
The Boston Globe, Robert Campbell: I found it a satisfying experience of richly shaped gallery spaces, where the art felt quite at home, and a memorable exterior that looks like a joyful explosion in a toy store.
Bloomberg, James Russell: Denver's Frederic C. Hamilton Building is an extraordinary celebration of the city's idealism and aspiration.
The New Yorker , Paul Goldberger: This building is a thrilling affirmation of the idea that museums can be art works as well as merely containers.
The New York Times, Nicolai Ouroussoff: The museum can be magical
Its bold, often mesmerizing forms reaffirm the originality of [Libeskinds] talent, yet its tortured geometries make it a daunting place to install or view art.
Financial Times, Edwin Heathcote: It manages to accommodate the art in a fresh, intelligent and stunning manner.
Newsweek, Cathleen McGuigan: The building is smashing.
Time, Richard Lacayo: If anyone doubts that Libeskinds ideas are a route to a powerful new model of space and form
this is the building to change minds.
