SAN ANTONIO, TX.- Artpace San Antonio is now accepting applications for the 2028 Texas Open Call, the primary pathway for Texas-based artists to be considered for Artpace's International Artist-in-Residence program and for studio visits from curators in Artpace's Curatorial Residency program. The application period opened on Monday, July 13, and closes Monday, August 24, 2026, at 5:00 PM CST. Applications are submitted online at AnyArtist.org.

To limit financial barriers and make the process more accessible, Artpace is waiving application fees for the 2028 Texas Open Call.

The Texas Open Call, open to artists currently living and working in Texas, is Artpace’s primary resource for identifying artists interested in and eligible for participation in the International Artist-in-Residence program, as well as for studio visits by curators participating in the Curatorial Residency program.

Additionally, this list is a resource that Artpace shares with prominent visiting directors, curators, and writers from organizations around the world who want to know more about Texas artists. All Texas artists who meet the eligibility requirements will be reviewed by guest curators and Artpace staff. For artists who are selected by the curators for studio visits, these visits will take place in 2027.

Since opening in 1995 in a converted 1920s Hudson automobile dealership one block from San Antonio's River Walk, Artpace has served as an international laboratory for the creation and advancement of contemporary art. Housed in a 23,000-square-foot facility renovated by Lake/Flato Architects, Artpace nurtures the creative expression of emerging and established artists while engaging audiences in San Antonio and beyond.





Twice a year (Spring and Fall), Artpace hosts a residency bringing together one Texas artist, one national artist, and one international artist, each selected by a leading guest curator. Over an eight-week residency, artists receive:

• Travel to and from San Antonio for a preliminary visit and the residency itself
• A $6,000 living stipend
• A production budget of up to $10,000
• A furnished apartment
• A dedicated studio and exhibition space
• Access to fully equipped wood and metal workshops and a digital media studio, along with technical and administrative support

Each residency culminates in an approximately eighteen-week exhibition of newly created work at Artpace. The program is designed to give artists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines the resources and freedom to take creative risks, expand their practice, and produce ambitious new work.

The Texas Open Call is open only to artists who currently live and work in Texas and have done so for at least one year at the time of application. Applicants based in other states or countries will not be considered.

Current students, Artpace staff, and members of Artpace's Board of Directors — along with their spouses, domestic partners, and immediate family — are not eligible to apply. Artists who have previously completed an Artpace residency may still be reviewed by guest curators but are not eligible for future residencies.

Artists are encouraged to apply early, as the application deadline is firm and will not be extended.
