PITTSFIELD, MASS.- Berkshire Museum today announced a grant from the Feigenbaum Foundation in support of its newly expanded aquarium, which will be named the Feigenbaum Aquarium in recognition of the foundation’s longstanding partnership with the museum.

The aquarium and museum will open on July 29 following an extensive renovation of the historic institution.

Nearly twice the size of its predecessor and relocated to a prominent first-floor space, the Feigenbaum Aquarium will feature terrestrial and aquatic animals, including a Caribbean reef octopus, epaulette sharks, moon jellyfish, tortoises and other species. The expanded space will support live-animal experiences, educational programs and special events exploring biodiversity, ecosystems and environmental stewardship.

“The aquarium has been one of the museum’s most beloved experiences for generations, and this new space gives it the scale and prominence it deserves,” said Kimberley Bush Tomio, executive director of Berkshire Museum. “The Feigenbaum Foundation’s generosity has helped us create a place where visitors can encounter extraordinary animals, ask questions and deepen their connection to the natural world.”

As Berkshire County’s only aquarium, the Feigenbaum Aquarium will serve as an important regional educational resource and advance the museum’s mission of connecting art, history and science through meaningful learning experiences. The Feigenbaum Foundation has supported Berkshire Museum and other educational and cultural organizations throughout the Berkshires for many years. Before the renovation, the foundation’s name was associated with the museum’s Feigenbaum Hall of Innovation, which opened in 2008.

“Berkshire Museum has long created educational experiences that invite people of all ages to learn, explore and discover,” said Emil George, president of the Feigenbaum Foundation. “We are proud to support the new aquarium and help make this next chapter possible for the museum and the community it serves.”

The new aquarium will also honor the late Thom Smith, who served for decades as the museum’s natural science curator. A dedicated panel featuring Smith will recognize his years at Berkshire Museum, his role in shaping its live-animal programs, and his lasting contributions to science education in the Berkshires. Through exhibitions and hands-on learning experiences, Smith introduced generations of visitors to the natural world and made science accessible and memorable for families and students throughout the region.

“Thom had a remarkable ability to help people connect with animals and see the natural world with greater curiosity and respect,” said John Brancazzu, aquarium director at Berkshire Museum. “He had a profound impact on the museum and on generations of families throughout the Berkshires. Honoring him in the new aquarium will ensure that his passion for education continues to inspire visitors.”

The aquarium and the museum’s renovated first-floor spaces were designed by Yo-ichiro Hakomori, design architect with StudioHAU in Los Angeles, in collaboration with Mark Eichorn, architect of record at Bradley Architects in Pittsfield. David J. Tierney, Jr. Inc of Pittsfield completed the construction and Skanska provided project management, with aquarium development led by Steve Vogel of Aquarium Consultants LLC and installation by SeaQuatic Aquariums.

Berkshire Museum will reopen on July 29, 2026, and will be open Friday through Wednesday from 10AM to 5PM.
