PARIS.- This fall, OFFSCREEN Paris returns to the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière from October 20 to 25,2026 (VIP preview October 19). For its fifth edition, the event honors Ana Mendieta and welcomes Pinault Collection and the Whitney Museum of American Art in its Acquisitions and Discoveries program.
OFFSCREEN Paris is a nomadic event that values contemporary, historic and avant-garde artists with experimental image-based practices. With its distinct voice, it is a must-see highlight of Paris Art Week each October, bringing together a tightly curated selection of artists working with installations, still and moving images.
For the second year in a row, OFFSCREEN invites two major cultural institutions to take part in its Acquisitions and Discoveries program. Within the "Magasins", the historic building situated in the southern nave of the Chapelle Saint-Louis, Pinault Collection and the Whitney Museum of American Art will present image-based works from their collections.
In 2025, the Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Pompidou and ZKM | Center for Art and Media inaugurated this program with the works from Phill Niblock, Timm Ulrichs, Analívia Cordeiro and Urs Lüthi.
ANA MENDIETA | GUEST OF HONOR
OFFSCREEN celebrates Ana Mendieta (1948–1985) this year as the Guest of Honor. The major multidisciplinary artist is renowned for her works in the landscape, earth/body works, and sculptures in which she used her body — or its absence, evoked in what she called “siluetas” (silhouettes) — in dialogue with earth and other natural elements including fire, flowers, and water.
One of the most prolific artists using film and video in the 1970s, Mendieta made over a hundred films in her career. Mendieta is represented by Marian Goodman Gallery (New York, Paris), which is participating in OFFSCREEN for the second time. The presentation is developed in collaboration with the Estate of Ana Mendieta.
The installation will complement the simultaneous major exhibition at Tate Modern in London (2026) curated by Valentine Umansky and Michael Wellen.
Mendieta is the fifth artist to be honored as a Guest of Honor at OFFSCREEN. The presentation follows Anthony McCall in 2022, Rosa Barba in 2023, Chantal Akerman in 2024, and Shigeko Kubota in 2025.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Mendieta was sent to the United States as a young teen after Fidel Castro came to power. As a student of the renowned Intermedia MFA program at the University of Iowa in 1972, she began working with her body and with Super 8 film.
Her work has been exhibited in 56 solo exhibitions, and 16 museum retrospectives including at Jeu de Paume, Paris, France (2018); Castello di Rivoli, Turin, Italy (2013); Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. (2004); New Museum, New York, New York (1987).
Mendieta received major awards in her lifetime, including a National Endowment for the Arts Grant (1977 and 1980) and Fellowship (1982); John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (1980); Rome Prize, American Academy in Rome (1983); and many others.
LA CHAPELLE SAINT-LOUIS DE LA SALPÊTRIÈRE
OFFSCREEN returns for the second time to the exceptional Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière, once again activating this distinct architectural landmark.
Once a renowned home to site-specific interventions at the end of the 20th century, featuring installations by Anselm Kiefer, Bob Wilson, Lucinda Childs, Bill Viola, Nan Goldin, and Christian Boltanski as part of the Festival d’Automne, OFFSCREEN reintroduced La Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière into the contemporary art scene last year.
La Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière was originally designed by Louis Le Vau, architect to King Louis XIV. He passed away before completing the project, and Libéral Bruant, designer of Hôtel des Invalides and Notre-Dame des Victoires, completed the task.
Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière – AP-HP has a dramatic and significant history. Before becoming a hospital, it served in the 17th century as a hospice and detention center for women deemed “degenerate.” In the 19th century, the site evolved into a medical institution focused on neurological and mental health. Still dedicated to the treatment of women classified as “insane and incurable,” the asylum became the setting for early pre-psychiatric studies and treatments of madness conducted by Philippe Pinel and Jean-Étienne Dominique Esquirol.
In the late 19th century, Jean-Martin Charcot carried out his renowned studies of hysteria and hypnosis there, including the extensive photographic documentation of physical hysterical symptoms later examined in George Didi-Huberman’s landmark 1982 book Invention of Hysteria.
OFFSCREEN continues its distinctive architectural curation, presenting works in dialogue with unique spaces. Earlier editions took place in the brutalist Grand Garage Haussmann (2023, 2024) and the Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild (2022).
