NEW YORK, NY.- Alison Bradley Projects announced the representation of Brazilian artist Alice Shintani (b. 1971, São Paulo) in the United States, in collaboration with Almeida & Dale, São Paulo. Alison Bradley Projects will present Shintani's first US solo exhibition in Fall 2027.

Shintani's practice is grounded in an expanded understanding of painting as a site of spatial, social, and institutional inquiry. Working across painting, installation, collective actions, and interventions in public space, she investigates the ways images, objects, and gestures circulate between everyday life and the structures that frame contemporary art. Rather than treating painting as a discrete medium, Shintani approaches it as a mode of thinking—one that extends into architecture, urban space, and encounters with diverse publics.

Formally, her work is characterized by an economy of means. Color, folding, repetition, light, and simple geometric forms become tools through which she examines relationships between bodies, spaces, and systems of visibility. These understated gestures unfold through slow processes of making, resisting spectacle in favor of sustained attention to material presence and lived experience. Beneath their apparent simplicity lies a persistent engagement with the contradictions of contemporary social and political life, where intimacy and violence, care and precarity, coexist.

Central to Shintani's practice is an ongoing questioning of where and for whom art exists. Her projects frequently move beyond conventional exhibition spaces, emerging instead through public interventions, collaborative actions, or alternative forms of circulation that unsettle established distinctions between artwork and everyday experience. This commitment is informed by periods of sustained engagement outside the institutional art world—including her decision to step away from artistic production to work as a street vendor in downtown São Paulo—which profoundly shaped her understanding of labor, exchange, and public life.

Born in São Paulo to a family of Japanese immigrants and originally trained as a computer engineer, Shintani brings an interdisciplinary sensibility to her work, informed as much by systems of organization and urban experience as by art history. While deeply responsive to the specific political and institutional conditions in which it is produced, her practice remains resolutely open-ended, inviting viewers to reconsider how acts of looking, making, and inhabiting space might become forms of collective reflection.
