Should Tiles Over Existing Flooring be done?

The aim of this article is to give you all that you need to know about tiling over an existing floor. For more information about tiles, please visit this website.

Can you Tile over Any Type of Existing Flooring?

There are various types of floors and each of them has its pros and cons.

Tiling over Ceramic/ Porcelain tile is another method that can be utilized.

One of the best options is tiling over existing ceramic or porcelain tile; these tiles are firm and solid. The critical factor in this is the condition of the existing ceramic or porcelain tile. It is important to make sure that the current tile is intact and not cracked or not adhered as these will show through the new tiles. Any existing hollow sections should be fixed and the fixed sections will form the base for the new tiles.

Tiling Over Vinyl or Linoleum

A single layer sheet vinyl can be used as a firm based upon which new tiles can be installed, but tiles installed over cannot serve as a base. Pre-1980 vinyl can also be contaminated with asbestos (hazardous material) and should, therefore, be tested. However, if you're not sure of the material, it is better to tile over it, rather than risk cutting through the valuable material. Do not glue tiles to cushion or foam vinyl because they may compress during the gluing process.

Tiling Over Hardwood

Hardwood is not a good choice for tiling over because it is prone to expansion and contraction with changes in humidity. These expansions and contractions will result in unsightly cracked grout lines and eventually cracked tile. Ideally it should be covered with a layer of cement board or other uncoupling membrane prior to tiling. This layer will help secure the new tiles.

Tiling Over Concrete

Concrete is best to tile over because it's not going to deform easily. Concrete is a strong and stable material and can be used as a great base for tiles. It needs to be cleaned prior to tiling, and other significant preparation is unnecessary.

Factors

Before tiling over a floor, there are some key factors to consider.

The height of the floor and the height of the door opening.

The final height of the floor upon tiling may vary for the various types of tiles. It is also crucial to keep in mind that it will never be less than 1/2″. The height of the doors inside the room should be measured as some may not be able to be opened if there is insufficient clearance. This could also be a problem when moving from one room to another in these instances, transition strips might assist.

Structural Load Capacity

Tiles are heavy and during the installation process can stress the existing floor structure. This isn't a problem in most situations because tile floors are installed in residential structures, which are engineered to handle floor loads. However, it is essential to involve a structural engineer to make sure that adding the extra layer of tiles will not have any problems.

Subfloor Stability and Deflection

As mentioned above, tiles are quite heavy, meaning that extra pressure will be applied to the subfloor. All bends should be avoided, as they will result in the cracking of the grout lines and ultimately cracked tiles. The maximum deflection for a tile floor is 1/360th of the span. The deflection of 10 feet should be less than one-third of an inch.

Preparing the existing floor surface for tiling over.

Cleaning

Be sure the surface is clean from any debris, grease or wax as these will not adhere well to the surface.

Leveling

Any bumps can be sanded down and any depressions can be filled with self-leveling compounds.

Roughing Up

Glass and ceramic tiles are very smooth and will need special treatment so that the adhesive will adhere. This can be done using a scarifier. Generally, roughening is not necessary for vinyl or concrete.

Mortar/Adhesive for Tiling Over Existing Flooring:

This type of mortar or adhesive is used for tiling over existing flooring.

In most cases thinnest mortar can be used, but you should use a polymer modified or epoxy based thin set if tiling on ceramic, vinyl or any other surface that may be challenging. When applying a thin set it is important to ensure that the surface is compatible with the thin set being used.

Advantages of Tiling Over Old Floors:

Save on demolition: Avoid the demolition of the existing floor, which will save both time and money.

Cost savings for disposal: No disposal costs for existing floor, which is another cost savings method.

Avoidance of asbestos: Tiling over existing flooring leaves the flooring intact, which can help to avoid any issues that may be caused by asbestos.

Faster: This may save the overall process a lot of time.

Conclusion

Only in most cases, it can be tiled over an existing floor, which is beneficial and convenient, provided that the characteristics of the existing floor allow that. When it comes to tiling over an existing floor, a flat and reliable surface is always a good option, whereas any deformations or unevenness will lead to issues.

If there is already a tile layer on the floor, this can also be a good option, provided there are no damages on the floor and the existing tiles are firmly attached to the underlying surface. There are multiple benefits and multiple drawbacks that should be taken into consideration. If you're willing to go ahead, it's important to evaluate the current floor structure to make sure you choose the right one for your space.
