EAST PROVIDENCE, RI.- This August, bg Fine Art presents The Strange World of Louise E. Marianetti (1916–2009), an intimate exhibition of paintings from the artist's formative years of the 1930s and 1940s. The exhibition offers a focused look at Marianetti's highly personal vision within the broader tradition of American Magic Realism.

Marianetti studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 1936, before continuing her education at the Art Students League of New York under William Palmer and Robert Brackman. During these years she embraced the discipline of egg tempera painting while developing an artistic language that combined meticulous observation with quietly enigmatic subject matter.

A New York Times critic, reviewing her work in 1943, remarked, "I suppose this would be called, in accord with the newly invented tag—magic realism." The description captures the tension that defines Marianetti's paintings. Children, portraits, and familiar interiors are rendered with extraordinary precision, yet each composition possesses a subtle psychological ambiguity that transforms the ordinary into something quietly mysterious.

Returning to Rhode Island in the early 1940s, Marianetti became active in the Providence Art Club and the region's exhibition community. Her work culminated in solo exhibitions at Boston's Vose Gallery and the Newport Art Museum in 1949, introducing audiences to paintings that reflected a distinctly individual way of seeing the world.

bg Fine Art invite visitors to look beyond technical accomplishment of Marianetti and discover the artist's unique imagination. Like other American Magic Realists of the period, Marianetti used realism not simply to record appearances but to create images in which precision, stillness, and subtle disquiet coexist. Her paintings resist narrative certainty, encouraging viewers to linger, question, and form their own interpretations.

bg Fine Art is a regional American art gallery with roots dating to 1985, when it was founded as Bert Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island. Now located at the Rumford Center, the gallery continues to showcase and preserve the rich artistic traditions of Rhode Island and New England within the broader context of American art.
