HOUSTON, TX.- Between 1930 and 1970, more than 300 general-interest magazines were published for the Black community—nationally, including such titles as Newspic, Sepia, and Ebony, and locally, from Cincinnati’s NIP to Harlem’s Survey Graphic and Eyes in Iowa City. Black picture magazines and their image makers chronicled Black American life across the nation. At a time before social media, these publications were the primary spaces of self-representation, helping to foster communities and define cultural standards.

On view February 28 to May 31, 2027, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston exhibition Bold and Brilliant: The Rise of Black American Magazines, 1930–1970 is the first dedicated to photographers working for Black magazines across the country, spanning the eras of the Great Migration, Civil Rights activism, and the Black Is Beautiful movement.

Bold and Brilliant will present more than 100 images by 50 photographers about 100 magazines, shown alongside the vintage spreads in which they originally appeared. Because nearly all of these images were produced for publication in magazines—the primary way readers of this era encountered photography—most of these photographs are being displayed for the first time in the exhibition.

“This groundbreaking exhibition builds on archival recovery efforts to locate the work of hundreds of photographers, most of them overlooked until now,” commented Gary Tinterow, director and Margaret Alkek Williams chair of the MFAH. “The scholarship behind Bold and Brilliant demonstrates how visual culture reflects but also influences identity, self-representation and community allegiances—something that is at the heart of magazines and museums alike.”

Description of image

MFAH curator of photography, Lisa Volpe, noted that “The exhibition brings to light the importance of picture magazines as spaces in which Black culture and ambitions were proudly centered. Photographers were at the core of this work. After identifying more than 300 magazines and 900 photographers, we narrowed our scope to those photographers working for multiple magazines. We found their contact sheets and negatives in archives and libraries across the country, as well as in boxes brought down from the family attic. This is a chance to celebrate their important work and legacy.”

The exhibition will be organized by editorial sections: fashion and beauty, food and home entertaining, sports, music, nightclubs, professions, education, and activism. These thematic sections represent the most published topics in the magazines, allowing visitors to experience the broad themes and dynamic imagery that documented Black cultural life in these critical decades.

A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition, including essays by the show’s co-curators—Lisa Volpe, curator of photography at the MFAH, Anjuli Lebowitz, Judy Glickman Lauder Curator of Photography, Portland Museum of Art, and Brian Piper, Freeman Family Curator of Photographs, Prints, and Drawings, New Orleans Museum of Art—biographies of the featured photographers, a list of the magazines, and additional personal essays by Jason Moran on jazz, Tina Beyoncé Knowles on beauty, Doug Glanville on sports, and more.

Additionally, the museum has partnered with the University of Houston to produce and host an archival database of the newly rediscovered publications, with more than 2,500 entries anticipated. By providing access to these rare magazines, this online resource will ensure that these important cultural touchstones are available for generations to come.
