Art Museum Announces Winners of 2007 Fine Arts Competition

MYRTLE BEACH, SC.- Twelve area high-school artists received cash prizes up to $3000 April 1 in the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum’s Eighth Annual Horry/Georgetown High Schools Juried Fine Art Exhibition. The 87 pieces of student artwork chosen for display, from 320 entries, will remain on view at the Museum through April 27.

James Sakalian III of the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology received the top prize, a $3000 scholarship provided by First Federal Bank, for his portfolio. The award provides tuition assistance for four years of higher education in the arts.

Megan Goldston of Socastee High School took Best in Show for her untitled rice triptych. First-, second- and third-place prizes in two-dimensional works went to Mary Beth Van Der Horst of the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology, for her black and white pencil rendering, “I Make Life Complicated;” Katie Riley, also from the Academy, for her colored pencil portrait “Jamie;” and Kelsey Melzer of Loris High School for “Molly Smiles,” a digital photograph.

First-, second- and third-place prizes in three dimensions went to Socastee High School’s Ubaldo Garcia of “My Dreams,” a wood engraved box; Kelsey Melzer for “The Life of Emma,” an altered book; and Alex Rivers Matthews of North Myrtle Beach High School for “Mustang Sally,” a metal sculpture.

Honorable Mentions, two-dimensional, were awarded to Brittaney Johnson of Georgetown High School, Lee James of Conway High School, and Priscilla DeFilippo of the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology. Honorable Mentions, three-dimensional, went to Megan Goldston of Socastee High School, and to Tori Lo Presto and Brandon Payne, both of St. James High School.
