GWACHEON.- Marking its 40th anniversary, MMCA Gwacheon reflects on the unique character of a museum where nature, architecture, and art intersect. Through a constellation of exhibitions, educational initiatives, design interventions, and public programs, the anniversary program revisits the histories and spaces of MMCA Gwacheon through a contemporary lens while opening new perspectives on its future.

In the sculpture park, Lingering Grounds invites visitors to engage with sculpture within the natural landscape, while a special screening program dedicated to outdoor sculptors will be presented in the museum auditorium. Across key public spaces throughout the museum, Lightscape explores light through works from the collection, creating a continuous encounter between natural light and the artistic interpretations of light by artists such as Philippe Parreno and Kim Ayoung. In the second circular gallery, Afterimage further extends this inquiry through works that engage light, Perception, and spatial experience.

The program also includes a range of educational and participatory initiatives that invite visitors to share memories and experiences of the museum’s forty-year history. These include 40 Scenes, a participatory archive project, as well as The Scent of Summer at MMCA, a workshop presented at the Children's Museum. Finally, an integrated visual design project connects the spaces of MMCA Gwacheon, offering a renewed visual experience from the museum entrance through its surrounding areas.

Together, these exhibitions and programs illuminate the layered identity of MMCA Gwacheon as both a cultural institution and a distinctive site. Moving between nature and art, visitors are invited to experience the museum as a continuum of spaces, histories, and encounters, while reflecting on the experimental spirit and public ethos that have shaped MMCA Gwacheon over the past four decades—and continue to inform its future.
