Chujun Yang: Designer Bridging Medical Innovation and Art
by Jessica Smolinski

As contemporary design and fine art increasingly intersect with advanced technology and human well-being, few figures navigate this nexus as fluidly as Dr. Chujun Yang. Serving as an Associate Professor and Senior Arts and Crafts Artist at the School of Design, Shunde Polytechnic University, and expanding her global research footprint as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sydney and the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), Yang has emerged as a leading voice in medical interaction design, exhibition spatial innovation, and human-centric artistic expression.

Yang’s core creative philosophy centers on "Bio-mimetic De-medicalization"—a concept brilliantly embodied in her acclaimed oil painting, Forest Spirit Of Breath. Derived from her pioneering "Bye-Bye Virus" pediatric nebulization system, the artwork reimagines rigid, intimidating clinical hardware as a mystical "Spirit" adorned with fluid, wing-like contours and soft pearlescent textures, thereby breaking the conventional boundaries of medical design. The work serves as a powerful testament to how industrial precision can be harmonized with emotional healing, turning mandatory pediatric treatments into a journey of courage and imaginative engagement. This masterpiece has recently captured international acclaim across major global stages, making its triumphant debut at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris during the Art Shopping exhibition, before earning high praise from local audiences and scholars at the 20th China, Korea, Japan Contemporary Art Exchange Exhibition at Art Space Taihodo in Kumamoto, Japan. These successive international exhibitions across France and Japan underline a rare synthesis of industrial precision and emotional healing, marking the profound recognition of her design and artistic achievements by mainstream international art communities in China, France, and Japan.

This artistic brilliance is deeply anchored in Yang’s extensive academic background. Having earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Exhibition Design from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and her Ph.D. in Design from Da-Yeh University, her scholarly footprint spans AHCI-, EI-, and CSCI-indexed high-level international journals, exploring environmental design and serious games for medical rehabilitation. Moving beyond pure theoretical exploration, Yang possesses a rare talent for translating scientific research into real-world productivity. Holding over 20 national invention and utility model patents, her technological breakthroughs—such as tissue inflammation simulation systems and vascular monitoring wearables—have achieved successful commercial technology transfers, earning her prestigious accolades including the First Prize of the China Staff Science and Technology Innovation Award.

In parallel with her research and artistic creation, Yang is a deeply committed educator who has profoundly influenced design pedagogy in China. She has spearheaded multiple national and provincial curriculum construction projects (such as Furniture Display Design, which was recognized as a national-level online open course) and served as chief editor of Form Design, which was selected as a "National Planned Textbook" in China. Furthermore, Yang’s dedication to nurturing future design talent is reflected through her establishment of the "Chujun Yang Commercial Display Design Skills Master Studio" and her guidance of students to sweep top-tier honors in premier national design competitions.

Yang’s influence naturally extends into the global design discourse. Trusted for her keen professional insight and international reputation, she is regularly invited to participate in setting top international standards, most notably serving as a global jury member for the prestigious Italian A’ Design Award. By evaluating cutting-edge global design masterpieces, Yang continuously contributes Chinese scholars' professional judgment and standards of excellence to contemporary international design.

Dr. Chujun Yang’s multifaceted and brilliant career—seamlessly weaving together the roles of researcher, inventor, international juror, artist, and educator—underscores her steadfast commitment to advancing the disciplines of design and art. By continuously dismantling the barriers between cold technology and warm humanity, Yang demonstrates to the world that design and art are not merely aesthetic pursuits, but vital media for social progress, emotional healing, and cross-cultural dialogue.
