NEW YORK, NY.- 200E20TH presents Curious Company, a two-person exhibition featuring works by Mie Yim and Paul Joseph Vogeler, curated by Jenny Mushkin Goldman of Agency Esta. The exhibition is currently on view by appointment through August 28 in the Sky Garden Penthouse. As the third exhibition presented in the residence, Curious Company continues 200E20THs ongoing arts initiative, bringing contemporary art outside the traditional gallery setting and creating an interplay between the artwork and its domestic setting.
Curious Company brings together the distinct practices of Yim and Vogeler in a dialogue throughout the residence. Rather than presenting the works in a traditional white cube gallery, visitors engage with the artwork within a space where architecture, natural light, furnishings, and sweeping city views become part of the viewing experience.
Throughout the penthouse, a menagerie of unusual creatures, flowers, birds, vessels, disco balls, and ballet slippers emerges against the city skyline. Kaleidoscopic biomorphic forms meet delicate vanitas-like imagery in a dreamlike setting, where the familiar meets the uncanny and unexpected connections emerge.
Though markedly different in style, the artists share an interest in the uncanny and the imaginative, revealing curious points of connection between their practices. Together, their works create an unlikely dialogue around the thin line between danger and delight.
