MALAGA.- Edvard Munch and Pablo Picasso never met, but this fall Museo Picasso M醠aga will imagine what might have happened if their art had.
Opening October 30, Munch-Picasso will bring the two giants of modern art into direct conversation for the first time, assembling more than 100 paintings, drawings and prints to explore the striking parallels between artists born nearly two decades apart and shaped by very different cultural worlds.
The exhibition, on view through February 28, 2027, does not attempt to establish a direct line of influence between the Norwegian Munch and the M醠aga-born Picasso. Instead, curator Paloma Alarc looks at something less obvious and potentially more revealing: the emotional, psychological and artistic concerns that repeatedly drew both artists toward similar territory.
Love and desire, illness and death, loneliness and existential anxiety all run through the exhibition. Both artists turned intensely personal experiences into a new visual language, making emotion not simply the subject of art but one of the engines driving its transformation.
The female figure is central to that story. Women appear throughout the work of Munch and Picasso as figures of attraction, intimacy and desire, but also as more ambiguous presences shaped by psychological tension and shifting relationships between artist, model and viewer.
One pairing suggested by the exhibition brings together Munch's The Artist and His Model, painted between 1919 and 1921, and Picasso's 1963 The Painter and the Model. Created more than four decades apart, the works offer different approaches to a subject that occupied both artists repeatedly: the uneasy and often charged relationship between the person who looks and the person being looked at.
The exhibition also moves beyond the private world of the studio. Caf閟, cabarets and the bohemian spaces of modern urban life provided both Munch and Picasso with laboratories for observing human behavior. In these settings, each developed new ways of depicting the modern individual — isolated even in company, caught between intimacy and alienation.
The body provides another point of comparison. Sections devoted to the nude examine how both artists pushed against inherited conventions, using distortion, simplification and psychological intensity to rethink what a body could express.
Alarc describes the exhibition as an “imaginary encounter” between two artists who belonged to different countries and generations and approached painting in markedly different ways, yet shared what she calls an obsession with “the profound mysteries of life.”
That imagined meeting is supported by an unusually broad group of loans. Works are coming from MUNCH in Oslo, which is collaborating closely on the project, as well as from the Almine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso Foundation. Other lenders include the Albertina Museum, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sof韆, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Museu Picasso, Mus閑 national Picasso, Norway's National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Tate Britain and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Alarc brings decades of experience to the project. A member of Museo Picasso M醠aga's programming committee, Executive Council and Board of Trustees, she served for more than 30 years as chief curator of modern painting at Madrid's Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, a position she held until May 2026.
For Museo Picasso M醠aga, the exhibition offers an opportunity to reconsider two familiar figures without reducing either to the movements or biographies usually used to explain them. Munch and Picasso arrived at modernism by different routes, but both understood that the inner life — fear, desire, memory, isolation and mortality — could be as radical a subject as anything visible in the external world.
Munch-Picasso will be on view at Museo Picasso M醠aga from October 30, 2026, through February 28, 2027. The exhibition is organized with the special collaboration of MUNCH in Oslo and the Almine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso Foundation (FABA), with sponsorship from Fundaci髇 Unicaja.
