SASSARI.- A new open digital archive is bringing renewed attention to Augusto Salvatore Oppo (Sassari, 1939–2015), an Italian painter, designer and educator whose work developed over more than five decades but remained largely outside the national art-historical narrative.

Created by the artist's sons, Paolo and Carlo Oppo, the Augusto Oppo Archive has already documented more than 500 works and continues to expand as paintings, documents, photographs and testimonies emerge from private collections, homes and archives.

The project is not conceived as a closed retrospective catalogue. Its public and participatory structure is central to the research: collectors and private owners are invited to submit information and photographs of works that have not yet been documented. Publishing the archive has itself become a means of discovery, gradually reconnecting works that had become geographically and privately dispersed.

Oppo was born in Sassari, Sardinia, in 1939. Although he wished to study architecture, he remained in Sardinia and graduated in Law. His artistic activity became public at the end of the 1950s, and painting remained the most continuous element of a practice that would also encompass graphic art, screen printing, visual communication, design, exhibition projects and teaching.

The current digital corpus contains 540 records, including 522 paintings. Precisely dated works presently span the period from 1958 to 2011, while a substantial number of works remain undated and are deliberately left so until documentary evidence allows greater precision.

This methodological caution is fundamental to the archive. Documented facts, family testimony and curatorial interpretation are kept distinct, and incomplete information is not filled by conjecture.

Description of image

Seen across the growing corpus, Oppo's work resists a single stylistic definition. Figuration, landscape and recognisable objects progressively give way to reduction, geometric organisation and abstraction, yet traces of observed reality often remain. Colour, rhythm, surface and structure become increasingly autonomous without entirely severing their relationship with memory and perception.

Music was another recurring point of reference. Homage to Mozart, a triptych dated 2002, is among the documented works in which musical language becomes an explicit part of the artist's vocabulary. Rather than illustrating the composer, the work organises colour, grids and fragments through repetition, variation and visual rhythm.

Oppo's long involvement with graphic art, screen printing and design further complicates the conventional distinction between fine art and applied practice. For the archive, these disciplines are not treated as separate careers but as related fields in which questions of structure, sequence, colour, reproduction and visual communication repeatedly return.

The research project has proposed the expression “a lateral modernity” as a critical tool for approaching Oppo's position. It is not the name of a movement and does not imply undocumented affiliations. Instead, it asks how an artistic practice developed outside Italy's dominant cultural centres can engage with broader post-war questions while remaining difficult to place within established narratives.

Works by Oppo are recorded in public collections and catalogues including the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Sassari, the municipal art collections of Sassari, the Pinacoteca Comunale Carmelo Floris in Olzai and the Pinacoteca Giuseppe Altana in Ozieri. In 2022, works by the artist entered the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Sassari through separate donations.

The digital archive is intended as the first stage of a broader cultural project. The family hopes that the continuing reconstruction of the corpus will create the conditions for further scholarship, a future dedicated foundation and the first major posthumous exhibition of Oppo's work.

The archive is available in multiple languages at: https://www.augustooppo.it/en/

Collectors, institutions and private owners who hold works or documentation relating to Augusto Oppo can contribute through the archive's public submission section.
