A drawing on a screen owes nothing to gravity or heat, and nothing at all to the minimum radius of a bent tube. Hand it to a fabricator, and those things start making demands. Lines that curled elegantly at 200 pixels turn out unbendable at 40 centimeters, and kerning that looked tight on the artboard leaves two letters welded together once each carries a physical stroke.
Artists have argued with this material for decades. In 1951, Lucio Fontana suspended roughly 100 meters of hand-bent tube above the grand staircase of the 9th Milan Triennale, an arabesque of light that visitors walked up into.
What has changed since is who gets to have it, since design software and low-voltage LED brought the material within reach of anyone with a file and a wall.
Why a Neon Sign Has to Begin as a Vector File
You can't build a sign from a photograph. A vector file can, because it stores artwork as coordinates and paths rather than pixels, and a path is the closest on-screen equivalent of the route a tube will take. Scale it to three meters, and the geometry holds.
Fabricators read those paths as instructions. Anything that exists only as an appearance setting, a live font, or an applied stroke weight gets ignored or guessed at, and guessing is where quotes go wrong.
The neon designs that make it through this stage without any questions usually have a few good habits from the start:
- Text converted to outlines, so the typeface travels with the file
- Strokes expanded into closed paths, not left as weights
- Artboards set in millimeters or inches, never pixels
- Overlapping shapes merged, since two paths in one spot become two tubes
None of it is glamorous. It is the difference between a quote in a day and a fortnight of emails.
What Custom Neon Sign Design Does to Letterforms
Type behaves differently once every letter gains a physical thickness. A hairline serif has no hairline in tube form, because the thinnest stroke available is still several millimeters across. Counters, the enclosed spaces inside letters like a, e, and o, fill in first. Tight kerning closes up, and a script that looks airy on paper arrives with its loops touching.
Script faces survive best, which is part of why so much neon reads like handwriting: a joined-up word can be built as one continuous run, with fewer breaks and fewer places for the light to stop. Block and geometric faces are harder than they look, since each letter tends to be built as its own section and joined afterward.
Logos have their own problems. Neon doesn't work well with the small details and tight spaces that are common in print design. Normally, to turn a logo into a neon sign, you redraw it as a simple, one-line version, keeping the outline and losing the extra detail.
The Bend Radius That Quietly Rewrites Your Drawing
Every tube has a minimum radius it can take without kinking, and LED flex has the same limit for a different reason: bend it too tightly, and you pinch the circuitry inside, which later shows up as a dead spot. Sharp interior corners come back rounded, and tight spirals get simplified. The thinnest common flex profile holds letter heights down to roughly 60mm, and below that the detail starts closing up on itself.
Then there are the parts that should not glow. A word written as one line still has to travel from the end of one letter to the next. Glass shops paint those linking sections with blackout paint; the trade name is blocked-out sections.
LED builds cut the letters apart instead and route the wiring behind the backing panel. Either way, somebody decides where the light stops, and that decision belongs to whoever drew the thing.
How Color Behaves Once the Vector Art Is Lit
Color on a screen is a value. Color in a sign is a light source, and it refuses to stay inside the drawing. A red piece puts red on the wall behind it and on anyone standing near it.
The mechanics differ by build. The color of classic glass comes from the gas inside the tube and the phosphor coating on the tube wall, so pure neon gas gives that particular orange-red and very little else. Blue, green, and soft pink result from argon, a trace of mercury, and the coating.

Warm white sits close to a domestic bulb and flatters wood and skin. Cool white reads clinical and will fight a room full of warm lamps rather than join it.
The Parts of a Neon Sign That Never Appear in the File
The finished object includes things nobody drew. A backing panel has to be shaped, either cut to follow the outline of the letters or left as a visible rectangle, and that choice alters the piece as much as the typeface does. The cable has to leave the panel somewhere, and that somewhere stays visible for the life of the sign.
Power is the other quiet decision. Low-voltage LED runs off a 12V or 24V driver on the end of a lead, which is why these pieces hang in bedrooms and galleries without special provision. Glass neon needs a transformer running at thousands of volts.
No file can show how the object behaves in a room. The glow lands on the wall, the color shifts against the paint behind it, and the drawing stops being a drawing. It becomes a light.
