Simon Woolham Shreds of Evidence (detail) 2007.

LONDON.- Shreds of Evidence presented by Parabola at the Museum of Garden History from May 25 – August 26, 2007. In November 2006 artist Simon Woolham started a four month residency at the Museum of Garden History developing works that subtly dialogue with the Museum architecture and artefacts. During that time he also ran a series of workshops with year 5 pupils from Walnut Tree Walk School, a primary school located in the vicinity of the Museum.
The children workshops have concentrated on the exploration of their favourite places both in the playground and in the Museum. Using drawing, language, digital manipulation and sound, the children have produced a variety of works which will be presented in the school - three-dimensional paper models - and in the Museum - drawings in snowdomes and digital animations.
Referencing the philosophical and spatial experiences found in this idiosyncratic museum, Simon Woolham's work will take the form of interventions within the displays and digital animations to be shown on security cameras as if they were inherently part of the life of the Museum.
The interventions reflect the artist's interest in the overlooked, neglected spaces where a lost narrative could unexpectedly unfold. Made of paper, either chewed, cut, torn or twisted, these quirky bits become witty comments and poetic gestures nesting amongst the garden tools.
The animations are made by photographing the interventions in situ and animating the image. The paper 'sculptures' appear to respond to their surrounding: jerky movement and undefined sound give the impression that they are brought to life by feeding on the hidden energy of the host building.
A publication featuring the work produced during the residency with a commissioned text by Lisa Le Feuvre will be available.
Simon Woolham studied Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University (BA) and graduated from Chelsea College of Art (MA with Distinction) in 2000. In 2006 he was the first artist in residence at the Baltic, Gateshead and has shown at the Dean Clough Gallery, Halifax; the Lowry and Cornerhouse, Manchester and was part of Paper Cuts at Bury St. Edmunds Gallery currently touring to Hove Museum & Art Gallery.
The residency has been generously funded by Arts Council England, London and the Museum of Garden History. It is curated by Danielle Arnaud.
