Traditional Art

When asked to name famous artworks, you may say the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, or the Winged Victory of Samothrace. They are, after all, some of the masterpieces with the greatest amount of name recall.

Paintings and sculptures are heartrendingly beautiful. They抮e impressive. They wonderfully and masterfully immortalize a moment of whimsy or a particular whisper of movement, a split-second of existence where the light, the tension, the space, and the expression are all exactly right to elicit interest, wonder, or strong emotions.

However, these artworks are static. They don抰 change, except maybe if you focus a spotlight on them, hang or place them lower or at a skewed angle, or the light of the sun hits them just so to highlight a heretofore unnoticed feature.

Apart from these minute changes, traditional artwork merely mellows or fades over time but doesn抰 change much, at least not suddenly.

Dependent on the Environment

Light, air, and water combine to create swirls, lines, forms, and clouds that are perennially shifting with your perspective, the walls, the ceilings, the features of the space, and other people sharing the experience with you.

At teamLab Phenomena, art is a function of the interplay between technology and place. It cannot exist independently or separately from its surroundings. Change the environment, and the art changes with it. Destroy the art, and it shifts but remains, only with a different structure or form. Destroy the environment, and the art vanishes.

That抯 what it means when art is an outcome of the environment. The environment is integral to its existence.

Ambiguous Forms

teamLab Phenomena artworks are ambiguous. They have a general shape and form, but they don抰 stay the same or even look the same from different perspectives. Look at them from the left or right, and they typically look different. Unexpectedly, some look exactly the same even when you look at them from any angle (e.g., Absolute Front Torus).

View them from within the phenomena, and they can look even stranger. The artwork can conform to your body and flow around the space occupied by your body (e.g., Wind Form, Waves). From some points of view, some of the shapes levitate, while others spin, pulse or change colors.

Immersive Artworks

Immersion is also a core requirement of experiencing the exhibits at teamLab Phenomena.

You can touch, push, and spin them. Your touch can break shapes (e.g., Morphing Continuum), make birds and butterflies fly (e.g., Flutter of Butterflies, Bicosmos). You can draw creatures and see them come to life (i.e., Graffiti Nature and Beating Earth), and you need to stand knee-deep in water in some of them.

Temporal Pieces

Change and interdependence are also core characteristics. The art changes with the level of the water (e.g., the Accumulation of Time), with the number of people on the exhibit floor, with the volume of light particles, the particles� colors, and the force and direction of your touch.

Temporality is a given. If the art changes with your participation, the elements, the environment, and the interaction among all these, the art does not, cannot, remain the same.

Appreciating the Artwork

There抯 only one way to appreciate the art at teamLab Phenomena. You must absorb it with your senses.

See them. Observe them. Look at them from afar, and see them up close.

Touch them. Put your hand out and reach. Place your feet just so. Watch the lines, waves, or flutters disappear and reform around your hand or somewhere else, and observe the void fall and bounce.

Hear. Listen to the sound the artworks make (for instance, the way the Ovoids in the Floating Microcosms resonate with one another). Watch out for any changes when you interact with the artworks or disrupt their natural flow and order.

Stand still and take in everything, and watch, feel, and hear how the art changes when you move or do something.
