How to Wash an Essentials Hoodie Without Shrinking or Fading

Nobody ruins a hoodie on purpose. It usually happens on a busy Sunday, when everything goes into one hot load and the dryer gets cranked, so the laundry is done by dinner. Do that a few times with Essentials Hoodies and the thick fleece starts to look tired: a bit shorter, a bit fuzzy, the logo cracking at the corners.

And it's not really bad luck. It's pretty much always heat, rubbing or some harsh product, and honestly you can avoid all three without turning laundry into a whole project.

So What's Actually Doing the Damage?

Mostly heat. Cotton pulls in on itself when it gets hot, in the washer or in the dryer, so that's usually where the missing couple of centimetres went when your hoodie suddenly sits higher on your waist. And that rubbery logo on the chest doesn't love heat either, it goes a bit soft and then one day you notice little cracks, or a corner starting to peel up.

Then there's rubbing. Your fleece gets tossed around in the drum with jeans and zippers and scratchy towels, and tiny fibres work loose and roll up into those little balls you end up picking off your sleeves on the bus. That's pilling, basically.

Bleach is the obvious no, but a lot of the extra-strength stain stuff and brighteners are kind of rough on colour too, and you'll see it first on the darker shades.

How I'd Wash It

Quick thing first. Check the little care label inside yours, because blends shift a bit between drops and that tag knows your hoodie better than I do.

  1. Inside out first. The logo's tucked away then, and if it pills at all it's on the inside where no one looks.

  2. If you've got a mesh laundry bag lying around, throw it in that too.

  3. Set the machine to cold and pick gentle or delicate, whatever your washer calls it.

  4. Go light on the detergent, and a mild one if you have it, because extra soap just gets stuck in thick fleece, and it comes out feeling kind of waxy.

  5. Wash it with other soft stuff in similar colours, and leave the jeans, towels and anything with a zipper for a different load.

And look, most of us wash hoodies way more than they need. Wore it to grab groceries and it smells fine? Chuck it over the back of a chair for the night and put it on again tomorrow. Fewer washes, less wear, that's pretty much the whole idea.

Honestly, It's the Dryer

Most people blame the washing machine, but the dryer is where hoodies really get hurt, so if you're only going to change one thing, I'd make it this.

I'd air dry it. Kind of squish the water out with your hands (wringing stretches it, so don't), pull the hood and cuffs back into shape and lay the thing flat on a rack, or a towel on the bed works too. Soaking wet, a heavy hoodie weighs a ton, so if you hang it like that the shoulders and neck just slowly sag.

Need it by morning? Fine, use the lowest heat or air-only, and yank it out while it's still a bit damp so it can finish on the rack.

Spills, Little Bobbles, Stiffness

Spilled coffee or a bit of lunch on it? Blot it, don't scrub. I'd mix a drop of mild detergent into some cold water and dab it on, then rinse it from the back side of the fabric, so the stain gets pushed out rather than deeper in.

Oil and makeup are a bit more stubborn, so rub a little dish soap into the spot, give it about ten minutes and then wash it normally. Deodorant marks are weirdly simple, you can mostly get them off by rubbing the fabric against itself while it's dry. And with any stain, stay away from hot water, since heat can basically lock it in for good.

Pills showing up anyway? A fabric shaver sorts them out in a few minutes, just keep the hoodie flat and don't press hard. And if it comes off the rack feeling a bit stiff, ten minutes in the dryer on air-only fluffs it back up. I'd skip fabric softener here, even though it sounds like the obvious fix, because it coats the fibres and slowly flattens that brushed fleece, and it isn't great for the rubber lettering either.

Oh, and keep the iron off the logo, like, completely. A bit of steam from the inside is way safer.

Come May or June

Wash it one more time before it gets packed away, since skin oils left in there can go slightly yellow by fall. Then fold it (a hanger stretches the shoulders out over a whole summer) and stick it somewhere dark and cool. Sun through a window fades dark colours quicker than you'd guess.

Same deal for your lighter stuff, honestly. An Essentials T Shirt does way better with cold water and a flat dry too.

Key Takeaways

  • Hot water and a hot dryer are basically what shrink it and crack the print, so keep things cold.

  • The bobbles come from it rubbing on jeans and zippers, and inside out helps a lot with that.

  • Not much soap, and I'd leave bleach and softener out of it.

  • Flat on a rack to dry, folded in a drawer after that.

Frequently Asked Questions

So can it go in the dryer at all?

Yeah, on the lowest setting or air-only. High heat's the thing that shrinks it.

Do I have to wash it after every wear?

Nope. With a tee under it, four to six wears is usually fine, but after a sweaty gym day I'd wash it.

Can I shrink one that came out too big?

A warm wash and a medium dry might take it down a little, but you can't really control how much, and the logo may not like it. I wouldn't risk it.

Why is mine getting all pilly?

That's friction. Wash it inside out, in a mesh bag if you have one, and keep rough fabrics out of the same load.

That's Kind of It

So it's cold water, the gentle cycle and a flat dry, and that adds maybe five minutes to laundry day. In return your hoodie keeps its size and colour for years and not just a few months.

Be a little nice to it, and it'll still look close to new when next winter rolls around.
