FALMOUTH, ME.- Moss Galleries presents Expressive Roots, an exhibition celebrating the remarkable six-decade career of American artist Robert S. Neuman (1926–2015). Timed to coincide with what would have been the artist’s 100th birthday, the exhibition brings together works that reveal Neuman’s restless experimentation and distinctive approach to abstraction. Expressive Roots is on view at Moss Galleries in Falmouth, Maine, through October 17.

Emerging from the rugged landscape of the American West, Neuman developed into a distinctive voice in Abstract Expressionism, creating a body of work that balanced painterly spontaneity with rigorous draftsmanship. Throughout his career, he continually explored new visual languages, moving between loose, gestural brushwork and tightly structured geometry while drawing inspiration from landscape, memory, architecture, symbols, and the natural world.

“Robert Neuman was an artist of extraordinary curiosity who never stopped exploring what painting could do,” said Elizabeth Moss, owner and director of Moss Galleries. “What is so exciting about bringing together work from across six decades is seeing both the evolution of his practice and the ideas that remained constant throughout his career. There is an incredible energy and freedom in these paintings, but also a strong underlying structure. We are thrilled to celebrate his centennial and introduce his work to audiences who may be discovering him for the first time.”

The works featured in Expressive Roots reflect the inventive core of Neuman’s practice and his unique combination of painterly impulse and disciplined composition. Some canvases pulse with symbol-laden abstraction, their forms suspended somewhere between diagram and dream, while others feel rooted in landscape and memory, informed by the expansive skies and terrain of his Idaho childhood.

The exhibition is presented in conjunction with The Centennial Project, a celebration of Neuman’s life and prolific six-decade career. Through exhibitions, public programs, and new scholarship, The Centennial Project invites audiences to rediscover Neuman’s boundless creativity and consider his place within the broader story of postwar American art. www.robertsneuman.com
