ASTORIA, NY.- Museum of the Moving Image will celebrate the remarkable artistry and enduring influence of legendary filmmaker Vincente Minnelli and his daughter, Liza Minnelli, with The Minnellis, a retrospective exploring the work of a father and daughter whose individual contributions to film and entertainment continue to captivate audiences across generations. Starting November 13, the 28-film screening series will feature films directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Liza Minnelli. The two artists are connected by family, but each possesses an unmistakable vision and body of work.
Senior Curator of Film Michael Koresky says, Vincente and Liza Minnelli are two extraordinary artists whose work has left an indelible mark on American film and entertainment. This retrospective calls attention to the thrilling range of father and daughter Vincente and Liza Minnelli and their exacting approach to their art, with a lineup of unparalleled classics that often combine the dark and the exuberant in the same breath. These are undoubtedly some of the finest American films ever made. And theres so much here, from musical to melodrama to comedy, spanning the forties to the seventies.
Running through January 2027, the series features mostly 35mm prints, with some 16mm and DCP presentations, as well. Among the highlights is a rare theatrical presentation of the landmark 1972 television concert Liza with a Z, directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse and starring Liza Minnelli in one of the most celebrated performances of her career. Filmed at New Yorks Lyceum Theatre by Fosse and his Cabaret cinematographer Owen Roizman using eight 16mm cameras, the concert brought together an extraordinary creative team. It was edited by Alan Heim, who would later cut Fosses All That Jazz, with music coordination by Marvin Hamlisch, three years before A Chorus Line.
Other standout titles starring Liza Minnelli include opening night selection Cabaret, Bob Fosses masterpiece, which earned her a Best Actress Oscar; Martin Scorseses dazzling dramatic musical New York, New York; and a rare 16mm screening of Lizas breakthrough dramatic role in Alan J. Pakulas The Sterile Cuckoo, for which she received her first Oscar nomination.
On the Vincente side, the slate is bursting with highlights, including musical classics Cabin in the Sky, Meet Me in St. Louis, The Pirate, Brigadoon, and two Best Picture winners, An American in Paris and Gigi; brilliant melodramas, including The Clock, Madame Bovary, The Bad and the Beautiful, The Cobweb, Lust for Life, Tea and Sympathy, and Some Came Running; comedy gems like the original Father of the Bride with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor, and The Long, Long Trailer, with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz; plus rare 16mm screenings of Minnellis I Dood It and his final film, A Matter of Time, starring Liza and Ingrid Bergman, and featuring a teenage Isabella Rossellinis film debut.
Vincente Minnelli rose from department store window dresser and theater costume designer in Chicago to Radio City Music Hall musical director in New York, and ultimately to Hollywood, where his work at MGM helped produce one of the most versatile and accomplished filmographies in studio history. Liza Minnelli, raised in show business as the daughter of film royalty, forged a career entirely her own. Across stage, screen, television and the concert hall, her raw talent, dramatic range and unmistakable performance style established her as one of the defining entertainers of her generation. A recipient of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony honors, Minnelli remains one of the rare performers recognized across all four major American entertainment awards. Her memoir, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!, as told to Michael Feinstein, was published in March 2026 and became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller.
