HONG KONG.- Christie's global celebration of the 60th Anniversary of its Wine and Spirits Department commenced on 10 October 2026 with 'The Cellar of the Hon. Henry Tang'. Over 13 hours of competitive bidding from collectors around the world, this dedicated single-owner auction was 100% sold, achieving a total of HK$50,212,875 / US$6,398,544, with a hammer total of 151% above the low estimate. Leading the sale was a magnum of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Conti 1971, which realised HK$875,000 / US$111,500, more than 219% above its low estimate.
Renowned for the breadth and depth of Mr Henry Tang's collection, which spans many of the world's most celebrated wine regions and producers, the sale attracted enthusiastic participation from both seasoned collectors and new connoisseurs, resulting in 80% of lots selling above their high estimates. Outstanding performances were seen across Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne and Rhône, including sought-after wines from Henri Jayer, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Leroy, underscoring the collection's strong appeal among collectors worldwide. Almost half of the buyers were Millennials and Gen Z, and among them, close to 70% were new buyers, reflecting the continued appeal of fine wine collecting across generations. Following the success of 'The Cellar of the Hon. Henry Tang', Christie's global celebrations marking the 60th Anniversary of its Wine & Spirits Department continue in New York on 23 October with 'The Distinguished Cellar of an American Connoisseur', before moving to London and Hong Kong.
Mr Henry Tang remarked, "Collecting wine has been one of the great passions of my life, and I am truly thrilled by the tremendous response from collectors around the world to this sale. I am equally grateful to see these bottles continue their journey with fellow enthusiasts who share a love of wine and an appreciation for the people and stories behind every bottle. This collection has brought me immense enjoyment, lasting friendships and countless memorable experiences over the years, and I hope these wines will continue to be enjoyed, shared and appreciated for many years to come, bringing their new owners the same pleasure they have brought me."
