LA JOLLA, CA.- Joseph Bellows Gallery presents Roger Vail: Rod & Custom, an exhibition of photographs made at Midwestern raceways in 1967 and 1968. Among Vail’s earliest sustained bodies of work, the series records the hot rod and custom-car culture that developed around regional drag strips during the late 1960s.

Vail was drawn not only to the automobiles themselves, but to the broader environment surrounding them. Drivers, spectators, mechanics, girlfriends, machinery, signage, and the improvised architecture of the track all enter into his pictures. The customized cars, with their exaggerated forms, polished surfaces, exposed engines, and hand-built modifications, become part of a larger portrait of American youth culture and its particular combination of ingenuity, performance, competition, and style.

Working in black and white, Vail photographed with a directness that gives close attention to both social observation and visual form. Figures are frequently set against the graphic shapes of automobiles, tires, painted lettering, and mechanical components. His photographs move easily between portraiture, observation, and description, establishing relationships between people and machines without separating them from the larger setting in which the culture existed.

The work received important recognition early in Vail’s career. In 1969, photographs by Vail were included in Photographs by Roger Vail and Larry McPherson at the Art Institute of Chicago, on view from July 12 through September 1. The exhibition was organized during the tenure of Hugh Edwards, the museum’s influential curator of photography, whose exhibitions and acquisitions helped introduce a generation of photographers to a broader audience. Edwards was particularly known for recognizing photographers early in their careers and for presenting photography as an expressive medium deserving sustained museum attention.

Rod & Custom also anticipates concerns that would continue throughout Vail’s subsequent work. His later photographs of amusement parks, fairs, and nighttime public spaces similarly examine environments shaped by spectacle, recreation, artificial light, and the temporary communities that gather around them. In the raceway photographs, these interests appear in an earlier and more documentary form, grounded in the specific character of American car culture in the late 1960s.

Roger Vail: Rod & Custom brings renewed attention to this formative series through a selection of original gelatin silver prints from the gallery’s archive. Together, the photographs offer both a record of a particular American subculture and an early example of the visual intelligence that would characterize Vail’s work over the following decades.
