PARIS.- From April 21 to August 30, 2027, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, in partnership with The Broad, Los Angeles, will present the most extensive exhibition of the Broad collection ever mounted outside Los Angeles, filling the Fondations Frank Gehry-designed building with 164 works.
As The Broad completes construction of its museum expansion that will open in 2028, the two institutions have come together to present the collection in Paris. The exhibition will offer audiences a rare opportunity to see how Eli and Edythe Broad built one of the worlds leading collections of postwar and contemporary art, with a particular focus on US artists. They developed deep holdings of artists engaged with the subjects of their time. Their model continues to be applied today as the collection grows, adding new generations of artists.
Spanning art scenes from New York to Los Angeles, the exhibition offers a panorama of American art, from Pop Art to younger generations of artists, alongside major works by leading figures in the Broad collection, including Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami and William Kentridge. Recent additions to the Broad collection that will also be on view in Paris, which increasingly reflect the current moment in Los Angeles, include works by Sayre Gomez, Lauren Halsey, Patrick Martinez, and Laura Owens.
The exhibition will also include works by John Ahearn and Rigoberto Torres, John Baldessari, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mark Bradford, Chris Burden, Jack Goldstein, Mark Grotjahn, Keith Haring, Toba Khedoori, Barbara Kruger, Sherrie Levine, Roy Lichtenstein, Glenn Ligon, Julie Mehretu, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker and Andy Warhol.
Since its opening, the Fondation Louis Vuitton has presented major exhibitions dedicated to outstanding collections and collectors who have shaped 20th-century art, from Shchukin (2016) and Morozov (2021) to MoMA (2017), the Courtauld (2019) and, currently, Gustave Fayet. With The Broad in Paris, the Fondation Louis Vuitton continues this program, extending its reach further into the 21st century.
Opened in October 2014 and September 2015, respectively, the Fondation Louis Vuitton and The Broad are two major contemporary art institutions dedicated to 20th and 21st century works, which they showcase through their collections and exhibition program.
Suzanne Pagé, Artistic Director of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, praises the collections clear and committed choices, both in its selection of artists, represented in depth, and of works that promote social values of inclusivity and tolerance. I would like to thank The Broad for this collaboration, which allows us to further the presentation in France of American artists previously shown at our institution, including Pop Art artists in Being Modern: MoMA in Paris (2018), as well as in the various exhibitions devoted notably to Basquiat, Warhol and Kelly. It also offers an opportunity to discover new artists from the Californian art scene through the lens of The Broads choices.
Joanne Heyler, Founding Director and President of The Broad, says, "It is a particular honor to collaborate with Fondation Louis Vuitton on The Broad Collection Los Angeles in Paris, the largest selection from the Broad collection ever shown outside of Los Angeles. We are two quite young institutions, both over a decade old, and we share a common purpose to present a deeper understanding of 20th- and 21st-century art. As we build an expansion that will welcome even more visitors to The Broad in L.A. in 2028, this extensive exhibition in Paris allows us to share the founding vision of Eli and Edythe Broad to reach as wide an audience as possible, and highlights their dedication to artists as vital to understanding complexity in our world."
The exhibition is co-organized by The Broad and the Fondation Louis Vuitton as the Los Angeles institution undertakes an expansion designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, which will add 70% more gallery space and introduce new and dynamic ways of experiencing the collection when it opens in 2028 ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. The construction work, which began in April 2025 on The Broads 10th anniversary, is ongoing, while its Los Angeles galleries remain open to the public throughout the project.
The exhibition is curated by Joanne Heyler (Founding Director and President, The Broad) and Suzanne Pagé (Artistic Director, Fondation Louis Vuitton), with Ed Schad (Curator and Publications Manager, The Broad) and Olivier Michelon (Chief Curator, Fondation Louis Vuitton).
A fully illustrated catalog will reproduce every exhibited work, with new commentary and previously unpublished essays on the collection.
