DALLAS, TX.- Andy Warhol's vision of the American West reached new heights at Heritage Auctions on Oct. 22, when his complete Cowboys and Indians portfolio sold for $1,031,250, setting a world auction record for the suite. The result surpassed the previous record of $1,008,000, set at Sotheby's in 2022.

This result also led Heritage's Prints & Multiples Signature® Auction to $3.85 million, the second-highest total for a Prints & Multiples auction in company history. The 150-lot sale drew 864 international bidders and achieved a 99% sell-through rate, with additional auction records for works by Frank Stella, Salvador Dalí and Rashid Johnson.

"Breaking the world auction record for Cowboys and Indians is a tremendous achievement for our team and a thrilling result for our consignor," says Aviva Lehmann, Heritage's Deputy Chairman of Fine Art. "This portfolio brings together so many collecting passions - American history, Hollywood, Western art and Pop - and bidders responded with extraordinary enthusiasm. To see it lead one of our strongest Prints & Multiples auctions ever is especially gratifying."

Warhol's 1986 suite brings John Wayne, Geronimo, Annie Oakley and other figures together with ceremonial objects and the familiar Indian Head nickel across ten boldly colored screenprints. Offered with its original box, the portfolio included a John Wayne impression inscribed "Unique," distinguished by hand-applied elements including a pink-to-blue gradient on his gun and a red stripe on one tie of his bandana.

Complete portfolios delivered other standout results. Stella's Sinjerli Variations Squared with Colored Grounds, a six-work suite from 1981, realized $275,000, the second-highest auction result for that portfolio. His four-work Jasper's Dilemma, 1973, brought $40,000, establishing a new auction record for the suite.

Two further records underscored the sale's range: Dalí's 1965 lithograph Cosmic Rays Resuscitating Soft Watches achieved $30,000, while Johnson's Untitled (Seascape), 2023, realized $57,500, each setting an auction record for the respective work.

David Hockney's Tyler Dining Room, from the 1984 Moving Focus series, brought $175,000. Warhol's Albert Einstein, from Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century, achieved $90,625, another highlight in a selection spanning his explorations of celebrity, advertising and everyday objects. Picasso ceramics added another dimension to the auction's offerings.

"The depth of bidding was exciting to watch, with collectors responding to rare proofs, complete portfolios and exceptional impressions across the sale," says Rebecca Lax, Heritage's New York-based Consignment Director for Prints and Multiples. "These results demonstrate both the breadth of demand and the essential place prints hold in today's art market."

Johnson's Untitled (Seascape) also connects the sale to the Dallas Museum of Art's X Marks the Spot: Contemporary Screenprinting at Brand X Editions, on view through November 8. An impression of the work, printed and co-published by Brand X, appears in the exhibition, which Heritage sponsors. Lax spent three years consulting for Brand X and its founder, master printer Robert Blanton.
